DID YOU KNOW? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends taking your child to the dentist no later than 12 months of age (or 6 months after the first tooth erupts).

💬: how did your child’s first dental visit go?
If you haven’t had one, what’s your biggest worry?

🤍SHOP (LINK IN BIO) my Amazon picks for dental books, toys & roleplay when preparing for the first dental visit.

_____________________________

It sounds silly to take your child to the dentist when they can barely even walk, but it’s so important to find a dental home EARLY in order to establish healthy habits.

GOALS:
1️⃣ to allow your child to get acquainted with the dentist in a non-threatening environment
2️⃣ to build your child’s comfort & confidence in the dental setting
3️⃣ to keep the experience positive for the child and as educational as possible for the parent
4️⃣ to answer your questions & support you, too!

WHAT TO EXPECT:
▫The visit may include a full exam of the teeth, jaws, bite, gums, and oral tissues to check growth and development
▫️An age appropriate cleaning of the teeth
▫️The dentist will give you individualized advice based on your child’s needs — this can include brushing/flossing, diet, pacifier/thumb sucking/grinding habits, and injury prevention
▫️The dentist will also assess your child’s risk for cavities and develop a prevention plan

TIPS:
▫️Prepare YOUR CHILD with roleplay, books, or dental themed toys
▫️Prepare YOURSELF. Be honest with your view of the dentist. If you have dental anxieties, be careful not to relate those fears or dislikes to your child
▫️If your child becomes upset during the visit, stay calm and work with the dentist to create a positive experience!
▫️For younger or anxious kids, look for a pediatric dentist — we have had 2-3 years of extra training just to work with kids.

Remember, it takes teamwork between parent, child, AND the dentist to maintain a lifetime of good oral health.

Summer always seems to fly by, doesn't it? As a new school year and extra curricular activities approach, it's important to get back into the swing of things with healthy oralcare habits.

Here are a few things you can do to take care of your child's smile and have a healthy, happy school year ahead:

🖍 Re-establish a dental routine and go to bed earlier to fight fatigue and excess snacking
Incorporate water and teeth-friendly foods in packed lunches to prevent plaque from building up
🖍 Encourage mouth-guard use for sports and activities to protect those strong, pearly whites
🖍 And of course, make sure to book your hygiene appointments in advance before life gets too busy!

Implementing good oralcare habits go much further for your overall wellbeing than just having bright and shiny teeth, so making these rituals lighthearted and fun is essential in keeping them consistent.

And when you're ready to get your routine checkup in the books, you can schedule an appointment by calling or DMing us!

No insurance? No problem!

We know how busy your kids get, and we know that bringing them to the dentist's office twice a year can sometimes be overwhelming.

That's why we created The Sunshine Club (applicable before 3 PM), a membership program designed to help you get your children to the dentist when they need it most.

With The Sunshine Club, you'll enjoy two cleanings per year, two x-rays per year, 20% off all treatment and 2 fluoride treatments per year. Because their smile is worth it!

We all know and talk about baby teeth a lot, but what about changes in your little one’s teeth as they grow?

🤰🏻Your child will start developing their baby teeth even before they are born, at around 6 weeks in utero. Yes, that means when your little one is a newborn 👶, their teeth are already developing under their gums!

🦷 You may start to notice that your baby will begin to develop baby teeth at around 5-8 months. This carries on until about age 3.

🧩Fun Fact: It is usually the bottom two teeth that develop first!

You can expect to see at total of 20 baby teeth at about a rate of 4 new teeth every 4 months.

🦷 WHEN WILL YOUR CHILD’S BABY TEETH BE REPLACED BY ADULT TEETH?
Adult molars start replacing baby molars at approximately 6 years of age.

🧩Fun Fact: Adults have 32 teeth, while children have 20!

Your child might experience some temporary discomfort and anxiety caused by loose teeth, reassure them that losing baby teeth is a part of growing up and that new teeth will appear!

Once your child has developed their adult teeth, you can:

✅ Help your child avoid sticky foods and sweets that can get stuck in the grooves.

✅ Make sure that your child is brushing properly to prevent cavities.
✅ Visit your dentist for a full exam.
✅ Your dentist can evaluate if the molars are ready for something called “sealants” that can protect the teeth

Please feel free to DM or call us for an appointment and don't forget to save this post for reference!

Healthy teeth and gums for life start in childhood. Your child's first dental visit is to help your child feel comfortable with the dentist. The first dental visit is recommended by 12 months of age, or within 6 months of the first tooth coming in. Depending on your child's age, the visit may include a full exam of the teeth, jaws, bite, gums, and oral tissues to check growth and development. If needed, your child may also have a gentle cleaning. This includes polishing teeth and removing any plaque, tartar, and stains. The dentist may show you and your child proper home cleaning such as flossing, and advise you on the need for fluoride.

Our team at Main St Pediatric Dentistry excited to help make your child's experience a truly exciting and educational one here at Main Street Pediatric Dentistry. We would love the opportunity to help them achieve their optimal oral health, all while giving them a comfortable space to learn and play in. Our goal is to not only have your child leaving with a smile, but also to leave a lasting impression that has them excited to come back!

Please feel free to give us a call at 914-633-4440 or send us a message to schedule an appointment!
