Desert Mountain Pits
Custom built Pits and Smokers
Hey you, ya you, the people who have purchased a smoker from me. I would love to get a picture of you with your smoker. If you have one please respond with it to this post. I want to add a customer appreciation page to my website and need your help in doing so.
Without you, my marvelous customer, I wouldn't be building them!
Adding a little color to this monster 600 gallon, 1/2 thick smoker. This will hold temp for days!
Lots of trailer storage and a side grill for finishing off chicken, burgers, tri-tip or even veggies!
I wanted to make a smaller smoker for the backyard, weekend chef who wants more than what a box store has to offer. I am in the middle of some big builds but I was able to get this custom 70 gallon out to a customer. Super happy about this one and for sure do more. A lot of people just don't need a large backyard pit and, in my opinion, there is a gap in the market for them.
Would this be a size you would be interested in? Price at just under $3000?
I may switch to rolled tubing going forward but for now I used a 24" propane tank that is 34" long along with a 24"x24" non-insulated firebox. Went a little larger on the fire box to give more
space to move splits around to help control temp.
Upper slide out rack and lower drop in, along with a single Desert Mountain Pits Tel-Tru thermometer. Easy rolling, heavy duty casters and fixed stack with adjustable damper. Stainless door handle and 1" ball valve drain and pail.
Eveythign you need to start smoking.
Making headway on this 600 gallon plus have a 500 gallon and 70 gallon going.
First out will be the 600. She’s thick and heavy!
Also the first pits out of my new shop!
1/2” thick, 600 gallons, 1100 pounds empty….this is a big old tank.
Going to be a very cool build.
This was a collaboration between myself and a fabricator located in Nogales, Arizona. I built the pit and trailer and they did the paint, built the racks, inside and out. It’s a little different build as the warming box is part of the stack and from my burn in it seems to pull nicely and maintain great temp. It was truly a beast of a 500 gallon pit. Thanks Las Misiones Ornamental Design, LLC for giving me the opportunity to work with you and your customer.
A 250 gallon custom offset smoker on a custom trailer went out just in time to celebrate the 4th of July.
My pits come with an insulated firebox, custom Tel-Tru thermometers, machined stainless steel handles, folding stack, temp probe port, upper slide out racks and lower drop in racks. Plus water fill port and water pan and grease drain with ball valve and pail. Everything you need to start smokering except wood and protein. 250 gallon smokers start at $5100 and as shown are $6900.
Super busy summer. Its hot but now is the time to get out there and cook. up next is a custom 600 gallon offset as well as a custom 500 gallon offset. Got a couple of smaller ones to fill in the gaps as well. Busy is always good!
If you happen to see this smoker for sale please let me know. It’s a 250 gallon.
Custom built for your needs, one pit at a time, that's how I build them. Let me know how I can build you your next offset smoker.
Wrapped up another 120 gallon This one I played around with a black patina and it came out pretty neat and should only get better with age.
But now on to some big stuff. 500's, 250,s and even a 600 gallon. Going to be a busy summer! Reach out to me if you are in the market for a pit. Big or small I would love to build one for you.
Great seeing a 288 gallon put to some good use. Built this earlier this year and it looks like it’s doing what it was built to do. If you are looking for your next pit please reach out and let’s discuss what we can do for you to bring your smoking game to the next level.
Sent out a nice 150 gallon today. Went a little bigger on the firebox and the stack. It’s a big 150!
120 gallon with my Rough Ryder wheel package. This one we delivered to the customer in Moab for a cook he is doing for his company. The pit came out great and with the big wheels its super easy to maneuver around.
Rolling out a sweet 250 gallon smoker today. Really great 52 year old tank with great patina. Custom CNC handles made by the owner who kindly makes my stainless handles I use on my other smokers. I am really pleased with the way this one came out.
Sent out another pit today. 120 gallon with high temp black paint. This pit came together very nice, if I do say so myself. Customer was moving up from an Oklahoma Joes!
150 gallon ready to go to it’s new home.
Sent out a super nice 150 gallon today. Now on to the next one.
Stopped by the Bashful Bandit Barbeque for lunch today. Went with the chopped brisket sandwich and it was most excellent. Great time to sit outside and enjoy your lunch in Tucson. If you are in town swing by and get some great food and watch them run the pits while you eat. Can’t complain about a single thing!
Stopped by the roadside monument to Tom Mix on my way to Phoenix to drop off this sweet, natural patina 288 gallon on a single axle trailer. This one should get lots of use! Decent lead times right now, let me know how I can be of assistance.
On to something a little different.
The 250 is at its new home at Tempe Eats in Tempe, Arizona. This built up really nice and I hope it gets lots of use.

Wrapping up a 250 gallon that’s headed to Phoenix and then on to the next one.
Just wrapped up a 288 gallon on caster for . This one is headed to California. Super excited to see this one get some use. I burned it in and its ready to cook on just as soon has he gets it home. This is a great size when you can't decide if a 250 gallon is big enough.
Getting closer to shipping this custom 288 gallon out. Stack and finishing touches and away it goes to Southern California. What a great way to start the new year!

What started off as an idea to build myself a larger smoker has turned into a great experience of helping others enjoy the craft of smoking.
When I build a smoker for someone I build it with the idea that it will be something they enjoy and take pride in. It will be on display at their home or business and it has to work as intended but also look great while doing so. For a lot of people there is a sense of pride in using an offset smoker because of the skills it takes to properly use one and I want to make sure I build them a smoker that helps them with their goal of making great food for their family and friends.
I greatly appreciate every single one of you who have trusted me to build them a smoker in 2023 and I look forward to and what is stating off as a busy 2024.
Happy New Year to all of you and to a great 2024!
90 gallon offset with all the bells and whistles you could want in a backyard smoker.
When you are building a smoker for someone that owns an aero space machine shop you get some pretty sweet handles! Complete with roller bearings and anodized color.
Super excited to see them open up. Took my friends and family there today for lunch and it was great.
Going to be an excellent option for dinning in Tucson and by far the best BBQ this town has seen.
I really appreciate the mention of Desert Mountain Pits in the article, super nice of Toby to do for me.
