I decided to restart my journey!
My name is Thelma Molina. I was living in Mexico with my two daughters when I got married and came to Arizona. I started taking English classes because when you come to live here, language is the first barrier you find; you need English for everything. I am so glad I came to Pima Community College because here I can get my GED® and a career certificate at the same time. Also, the Ambassador program was a great opportunity to get involved with the community. I learned new skills, and I feel more confident speaking now. I am ready to take advantage of the opportunities!

I can speak confidently in public!
My name is Mombeo. I am a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa. When my wife and 6 children arrived in Tucson in 2016 none of us spoke English.
Thanks to the wonderful teachers at PCC Adult Education, I learned to speak English, which helped me push my children to continue studying as well. Now, three of my children have studied at universities. Not only did I learn English, but I can now speak confidently in public.
I have become an ambassador for my community, helping others feel confident to go to school.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month
This year's theme is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together.” HHM takes place from September 15 to October 15 every year as a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements, contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of Hispanic-Americans who have enriched our nation for generations by making contributions in science, education, the arts, and public service.
The month also celebrates the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15th, Mexico on September 16th, and Chile on September 18th. They also include holidays that recognize Hispanic contributions such as Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day that is celebrated in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

PCC Celebrates High School Equivalency Graduates and Program’s 50th Anniversary, May 31
Cassandra, 51, who is also enrolled in Pima’s Medical Assistant IBEST program, ran away from home and dropped out of high school as a sophomore after learning she was pregnant. Looking for work, she found out she couldn’t get the job that she wanted without a high school diploma or GED. “The hardest thing was making the decision to push past my fears and finish the program,” she said. “I am so glad that I did…it is the most amazing feeling in the world.”
Matthew, who fell into the foster care system at age 16, went into hiding and dropped out of high school to avoid foster care. “Having made it through homelessness, I know I can do anything I set my mind to,” he said. “I enrolled in Pima’s GED program, and from that day on I knew I was destined to succeed.”
Former Adult Education administrator Jerome King, who was instrumental in solidifying adult education in Pima County, and former Adult Education administrator Greg Hart, who led the Adult Education program through an important transition from the Pima County School Superintendent’s office to Pima Community College, will speak about the history and impact of adult education.
For 50 years, PCC’s Adult Basic Education program has provided basic literacy to high school equivalency-level classes, English language instruction and testing, serving more than 6,000 students and many more testers every year.
