My bird challenge started 5 years ago. The river is alive with a wide variety of birds and they’ve built bird boxes, established protective efforts and worked hard to preserve this unique sanctuary for a beautiful variety of winged friends :) @ Rainbow River

The jewel of this small country town is The Rainbow River is a gently winding artery that is 5.7 miles long and merges with the Withlacoochee River at Dunnellon, Florida. The headwaters, Rainbow Springs, is the anchor for Rainbow Springs State Park. This first-magnitude spring is not one large vent but is numerous vents that issue 400 - 600 million gallons of crystalline water every day. Rainbow Springs State Park is a popular destination to swim, snorkel, canoe, picnic, or stroll on the walking paths to enjoy the many plants and animals that abound here.
🐢

Once named Wekiwa Creek, Blue Spring, and Blue Run, archaeological evidence indicates that the waters of the Rainbow River have attracted and sustained human inhabitants for over 10,000 years. The crystal clear water, abundant with fish, wildlife and vegetation along with the constant water temperature of 72[1] degrees Fahrenheit (22 °C), has attracted a number of modern-day activities.

Rainbow Springs and the Rainbow River became popular in the late 1880s when hard rock phosphate was discovered in the area. A small community called Juliette flourished near the springs during this "boomtown" era. In the 1930s the spring was developed as a tourist attraction. Sea walls, a lodge, gift shop, the waterfalls, and a reptile exhibit were developed. Under new ownership, the real heyday for the attraction occurred in the 1960s. During that time activity greatly increased with glass-bottomed boat rides, riverboat rides, log raft rides, a gift shop and cafe, an aviary, a leaf-shaped gondola/monorail system, a horse rodeo, and submarine boat tours. Not faring well when traffic began using I-75 instead of U.S. Highway 41, with many tourists heading to a new attraction called Walt Disney World, the attraction closed in 1974.

The Rainbow River was designated as a Registered Natural Landmark in 1972, an Aquatic Preserve in 1986, and an "Outstanding Florida Waterway" in 1987. The state purchased the original area that was the Rainbow Springs attraction in 1990. Volunteers cleared the overgrown park and opened the park on weekends to the public.

This account has been a bit dormant and as I wrap up a summer living in Florida, I wanted to share some of the river that my family has grown to love. My mom learned to swim on this river. I’ve returned to my grandmas place over the years, lived with her during college summers, caught turtles, watched gators, enjoyed a slower pace and this summer in quarantine—it was thousandfold kind of gift. Our original mission was to spend this trip storytelling along the road and capturing businesses and adventure. As numbers spiked and we were responsible to my grandma to keep from exposing her to much, our portfolio is more nature and family.... but now I’m thinking, isn’t that one of the most precious things about hidden treasures of towns like this? So in the spirit of sharing the guts and goodness of worthwhile things, I’ll be sharing things that are personal and precious to me the next few days :)

Arts Foundation for Tucson & Southern Arizona alongside
hired to shoot a few art installations that were spattered around . A recent project was to shoot this intense and thoughtful metal sculpture that frames the entry way of over on the northwest side of the city. says of the piece: "
AF: Why is this project important to you? In what ways do you see yourself continuing your work?
RS: An important aspect of my process in creating community-based sculpture involves getting to know the community's character and voice. I was struck by the PACC’s commitment and connection to the animals. The ways in which they infuse their work with love and care was a pleasure to bring into the piece. The sculpture integrates techniques that my team and I have developed and refined over many years, and the process of creating this piece will inform the evolution of my work in this style."

also, fun fact...the day we showed up to shoot was a big volunteer day where brought in a ton of volunteers to celebrate and walk the dogs and serve the community.
