The Tucson Jazz Institute ELLINGTON BIG BAND is getting ready to perform the 7-8 pm set at The Century Room tonight. Come and listen to this band’s last performance and wish the graduates much success.

Duke Ellington, who died 50 years ago today, achieved stardom in a country that offered Black artists adoration but denied them basic equality. A 1944 Profile captures Ellington at a high point in his popularity but still reluctant to discuss the contradiction between his cultural standing and second-class legal status. “You can say anything you want on the trombone,” Ellington said, “but you gotta be careful with words.”

Sarah Tolar is an accomplished singer, songwriter, performer, and music educator, who performed throughout the U.S., Europe, China, and Canada, and appeared on several televisions shows, including "The Today Show" and "The Late Show" with David Letterman.
