The gem-rich Ouro Preto mining district in Minas Gerais, Brazil is known for Imperial topaz, the trade name for topaz that ranges from medium reddish orange to orange-red in color. Yellow topaz is sometimes confused with the more common citrine (yellow quartz), which is most often created by heating amethyst to change its color. However, topaz and citrine are unrelated minerals with distinctly different properties.
