We would be willing to bet that if you called to mind any complex trauma survivor in your life, they would also have one chronic (or "mystery") physical illness, too -- possibly even several. In addition to their posttraumatic symptoms that may already be debilitating, survivors are also at risk for countless physical illnesses. The research conducted in this area has repeatedly shown that many of the aches, pains and disabling illnesses that survivors report are absolutely not "all in their heads" nor a case of "being really, really unlucky". There is a reason they acquire so many mental and physical health complications, and it's not bad luck, attention seeking, nor hypochondria.
Thanks to research like the ACEs study, the furthered exploration of epigenetics, and continued work on the neurophysiology of trauma, we know that trauma is experienced by all systems of the body and can wreck havoc in countless ways. From turning on unexpressed genes at birth, completely rewiring the nervous system, tampering with adrenals and hormone production, and so much more, the number of health complications one can experience as a result is presently limitless. Migraines, fibromyalgia, asthma, autoimmune disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, severe allergies, eczema, dysautonomia, POTS, EDS, neurologic disorders, chronic fatigue, or possibly even the highly insulting [and inaccurate] label of "conversion disorder" -- these are all seen to coexist alongside trauma in abundance.
Being able to tease apart which conditions were brought on by the trauma itself, the secondary PTSD symptoms, a genetic vulnerability, or an existing illness that was exacerbated by mental health symptoms can be incredibly difficult to do. Luckily, it's often not entirely necessary to know where EXACT responsibility lies when it comes to treatment. However, being armed with stable therapeutic care and a physician who understands the complexities of psychological trauma and its effect on the body, has brought many to increased wellness. As this information spreads worldwide and is eventually adopted as common practice for treating chronic trauma, we feel more confident that we will see more and more improvement in the health of trauma survivors everywhere!

In Silence At the feet of My Creator…. Pouring out every single emotion…. And He Teaches me not to “get over the loss of my baby brother” but ” to live with this emptiness” and He is teaching me how to grow from this. He is showing me the flaws in my mindset towards life and the meaning of salvation. I’ve been confronted with some false ideologies that I have towards salvation and I’m still healing and learning in silence. Processing everything has been difficult. I’m grateful I’m not alone. And I can be real with every thought and every emotion without being yelled at and condemned. I am just loved.
