Here’s a tip from your dentist: limit sugary and acidic foods in your diet.

Foods with high amounts of sugar, like chocolate, cake, ketchup, cereal, and low-fat yogurt, can leave your teeth vulnerable to cavity-causing bacteria.

Highly acidic drinks, like coffee, lemonade, and carbonated soft drinks, can erode tooth enamel, leaving your teeth sensitive and vulnerable to decay.

You only get one set of permanent teeth, so do your best to take care of them. Enjoy your favorite foods and drinks but remember to brush afterward to maintain your oral health.

It’s important to get your child into the habit of brushing their teeth. Here are some helpful tips for teaching your children how to take care of their smile!

1 – Brush along with your kids. Demonstrate how you should brush the surfaces of each tooth thoroughly, and gently. Set a timer for 2 minutes to show them how long they should brush for.

2 – Make brushing fun! Let them choose their favorite color toothbrush. Some kids don’t like the flavor of your typical minty toothpaste, so let them pick a more enjoyable one. Kids’ toothpaste often comes in bubblegum, berry, tutti fruity and other fun flavors while still containing the healthy vitamins and minerals that clean and protect their teeth.

3 – Don’t swallow toothpaste! Though the minty or tutti fruity flavor might be tasty to some kids, swallowing toothpaste can lead to an upset stomach. The fluoride mineral in most toothpaste is perfectly safe for brushing your teeth, and occasionally swallowing a small amount accidentally won’t cause any health problems. But swallowing fluoridated toothpaste frequently can cause stomach aches and even vomiting.
