Will hand sanitizers effect your jewelry? I recent industry trade journal posted the following:.
“To my knowledge, hand sanitizers are not capable of removing tough, albeit thin, rhodium that’s on a piece of jewelry. Hand sanitizers come in two varieties: alcohol-based and non–alcohol-based. The ones with alcohol are benign to jewelry items as alcohol is the main germ-killing ingredient. However, non–alcohol-based ones typically use chlorine-based compounds as germicides. These chlorine compounds could react with water and release free chlorine. Free chlorine radical is very reactive and could cause tarnishing of jewelry, especially if it is made of sterling silver. Also, halogens are known to cause stress corrosion cracking in low karat golds, in particular, nickel white golds.”
Is the Ostrich Finally Lifting its Head Out of the Sand? - IDEX's Memo It's a myth that, when faced with danger, ostriches bury their heads in the sand. In fact, they usually face the threat head on. Yet the "political" leadership of our diamond industry behaved like the metaphorical ostrich when they tried to convince themselves that lab-grown diamonds would not threa...

At Cunningham's we offer jewelry appraisals for our clients. Here is a situation we often find ourselves in.
ADVICE FOR PURCHASING JEWELRY WHILE TRAVELING:
SCENARIO 1 - You are out of your city, state or country, and are shopping. You find there is quite a bit of pressure to decide on the spot. You see things you like, but you really have no way to comparison shop as you normally might do back home. You forget yourself and just wing it. You take a chance and don't realize what you might have done to your wallet until later that night or maybe once you get back home. Then, you read the return instructions and discover how very difficult it will be to get this purchase reversed, exchanged or adjusted. We have had many clients in for appraisals in this very situation. As an appraiser it is our job to examine and value your purchase NOT to create a document solely for the propose to get your money back.

Happy birthday America! Land of the free and home of the brave!
This ring is a good example of why you should have your jewelry cleaned and checked on a regular basis. This customer wondered why her diamond fell out! With 2 prongs that need tipped only the dirt was holding her diamond in!
We recommend having you Jewelry cleaned and checked twice a year.
