FILM OF THE WEEK

WAGES OF FEAR
Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot • 1953 • France
A thriller of nerve-wracking intensity, whose dramatic cinematography and heart-pounding score ratchet up the tension, making for a truly exciting story but also one anchored in critiques of corporate exploitation and individual hubris and greed. One of the greatest thrillers ever made.

Inquiring Nuns
Directed by Gerald Temaner and Gordon Quinn • 1968 • United States
Delightful and sometimes revelatory, this hour-long documentary is built on a simple premise: two nuns on the streets of Chicago in 1968 asking a variety of people “Are you happy?” The answers touch on love, family, faith, work, war, loneliness, health, meaning, philosophy. A unique and charming hidden gem in the TCCL film collection that you are unlikely to find streaming.

FILM OF THE WEEK
Eyimofe (This Is My Desire)
Directed by Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri • 2020 • Nigeria
A wonderful debut from Nigerian twin brothers Arie and Chuko Esiri. Centered around what the directors have called a “reverse migration story”, Eyimofe drops us directly into the lives of two characters whose stories are connected not only by the bustling city of Lagos, Nigeria but also by their dreams of escape. Bleak in its depiction of a callously transactional world but filled with deep empathy and warmth, Eyimofe mixes gritty social realism with the soulful beauty of its imagery and soundtrack.
