Estate planning can feel intimidating, but don’t worry – we’re here to help, starting with a few key terms to know:
📄 Healthcare Directive - Also known as a living will, this document gives you the ability to state your preferences for your future medical treatment. You’ll also appoint someone to make medical decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated.
📄 Codicil - This is any sort of change to your will and explains, modifies, or revokes parts of the already existing document. You may need a codicil for major life changes like birth, death, marriage, or divorce.
📄 Probate - If you have a will, probate is the legal process in which it will be validated, and any remaining debts you have will be paid off before the remaining property goes to the decided beneficiaries. If you don’t have a will, the process will follow state laws.

As we approach the holiday season, both Thanksgiving and Christmas, we want to share some guidance, especially for those facing divorce or custody proceedings.
This time of year can bring unique challenges, but with some thoughtful steps, you can pave the way for a joyful season for you and your children by planning ahead. 👨👩👧👦
Here are a few key guidelines to keep in mind:
1️⃣ Refer to Your Custody Arrangement: Start by thoroughly reviewing your current custody agreement to confirm whether it has holiday provisions that you will need to follow. Sometimes, this information is in a separate section or document.
2️⃣ Know the Rules: Understand the rules for making changes to your custody agreement. Consent methods can vary, so be aware of what's required.
3️⃣ Co-Parenting Conversation: Before involving your children, discuss and agree on holiday arrangements with your co-parent. Clear communication reduces stress and confusion for everyone.
4️⃣ Document Your Plans: To avoid misunderstandings, put everything in writing. Confirm your co-parent's agreement and consult with your attorney if needed for a legally sound agreement.
5️⃣ Prioritize the Kids: When dividing holiday time, prioritize your children's well-being. Flexibility is key, as there's no one-size-fits-all approach.
Have questions about custody around the holidays? Feel free to send us a message – we’re always happy to help you and your family.
In the spirit of Halloween, we’re wishing you a 👻 spooktacular 👻 day of treats and fun.

Did you know one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime? And even more will know or love someone fighting this destructive disease.
That’s why, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to raise awareness about this form of cancer. Take a look at a few key facts below:
💝 One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
💝 The average age of diagnosis is 62, but breast cancer can occur at any age.
💝 Early detection is key to survival. When breast cancer is caught before it has spread to other areas of the body, the five-year relative survival rate is 99%.
💝 As such, it's important to talk to your doctor about any risk factors and get regular mammograms once it’s recommended you do so.
💝The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends women ages 50-74 with an average risk receive a mammogram every two years. Women ages 40 to 49 should talk with their doctor to determine when to start and frequency.
💝 There are many effective treatments for breast cancer, and the survival rate has been steadily increasing in recent years.
Share this post to raise awareness about breast cancer, and remember to talk to your friends and family about the disease and encourage them to get screened.

If you’re finding yourself with shared custody of your children, here are some key things to consider so you can optimize time with your kids:
- Keep it simple. Lunch dates and intentional conversations about what’s going on in their lives can carry more weight than extravagant trips or events.
- Remain undistracted. Putting away your phone and not fielding work calls during your time with your kids will make them feel as though they are important, especially as their lives are changing.
- Avoid venting. Share your feelings with others in your support system–friends, other adults in your family, or a therapist–but not your children. Don’t put them in the middle of any conflicts you may have related to the separation.
- Be consistent. Establish rules that are implemented in both parents’ homes. Concrete guidelines for things like homework, curfews, bedtimes, and bad behavior will provide stability for your children.
- Develop a shared interest. Having shared experiences with your kids will help build your relationship and establish memories that will last a lifetime.

Let’s face it – most Americans don’t find themselves navigating mediations all that often. That can make it hard to know how to choose a mediator when the need arises.
In case you find yourself in need of a mediator, here are a few qualities you should look for when searching for a mediation professional:
✔️ Preparation. Take note if you find a mediator who has gone the extra mile to research, investigate, and study the issues at hand.
✔️ Approachability. Quality mediators are friendly, respectful, and listen carefully.
✔️ Objectivity. To be effective, a mediator must be able to remain neutral in potential outcomes.
✔️ Trustworthiness. A mediator should inspire trust and confidentiality for all parties involved.
✔️ Intuition. Mediators need to be able to quickly assess a situation, understand its complexities, and offer clear options to involved parties.
