FLASHBACK: July 5, 1954 ⚡ Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore, and Bill Black are in a recording session at Sun Studio, taking a break after unsuccessfully trying to capture some old ballads. Between recordings, Elvis begins fooling around and singing an improvised, upbeat version of Arthur Crudup's song “That’s All Right.” Bill and Scotty join in and start having fun jamming along when Sam Phillips rushes in and asks the trio to start again so he can capture it on tape. History is made that night and the world would forever be different, because Elvis Presley had just recorded his first hit song.

Elvis Presley was a unique triple-threat entertainer during his career. He excelled as a recording artist, a movie star, and a concert performer. Only twice, however, did he excel in all three areas during the same calendar year. The first was 1957 (“All Shook Up,” “Teddy Bear,” “Jailhouse Rock” / Loving You and Jailhouse Rock / concerts in 18 cities). The second was 1969 (“In the Ghetto,” “Suspicious Minds,” “Don’t Cry Daddy” / Charro!, The Trouble With Girls, Change of Habit / 57 shows in Las Vegas).

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHY ELVIS WASN'T ON AMERICAN BANDSTAND?

Presley wasn’t slighting Clark by not appearing on his show. By the time Bandstand went national in the summer of 1957, Elvis had already abandoned TV entirely. Colonel Parker reasoned that if Elvis’s fans could see him for free on TV, they were less likely to buy tickets to his movies.
Although he kept Elvis off Bandstand, the Colonel clearly recognized Clark’s ability to understand and communicate with young people. “There is nothing basically bad or wrong about our teen-agers today,” Clark wrote in a 1959 magazine article. “They are better citizens than past generations for they are better educated in school and at home. They have broader tastes. They have ideals and they have values … Actually, I’m not defending teen-agers or myself. What I am trying to defend is my right and your right to go to a church of our choice, or buy the records of our choice. Elvis may start off his dinner with a banana split. Pat Boone prefers white buckskin shoes. Democracy would be in a bad way if our tastes in music, food and clothes were dictated to us. And when these little dictators try to enforce their will on us, it makes me blazing mad.”
At 30 years old in 1959, Clark also offered a respected adult voice in support of Elvis. “He’s a great talent,” Clark declared. “Whether you call it rock and roll or rhythm and blues or country music, his style is authentic. He has never faked his music. His music is honest. Many adults couldn’t see it. The younger generation, whose tastes were not prejudiced, accepted Presley’s singing for its freshness and exuberance. But this is not the secret. It’s something more than talent that Elvis has. Some people call it magic. I call it girl-appeal.”

May 5, 1956: Elvis' first LP (simply titled 'Elvis Presley') reaches #1 on Billboard's albums chart and remains in the top spot for ten weeks. It's the first Rock 'n' Roll album to ever reach the top of the charts, and the first million-selling album of the genre.

ELVIS PRESLEY was very close to both his parents from childhood and a newly unearthed interview with Vernon Presley sees his father opening up about a time the King of Rock 'n' Roll was struck down with a horrible illness.

During his early years, the future rock ’n’ roll icon developed an incredibly close bond with his mother and was also close to his father.

He started singing at a young age and was gifted his first guitar for his 11th birthday.

In a newly unearthed interview with Good Housekeeper, conducted in 1978, a year after Elvis’ death Vernon opened up about his famous son’s childhood, his talents and the grief of losing his twin Jesse Garon Presley.

Reflecting on Elvis’ younger years, Vernon said there was one terrifying instance when he was struck down with severe tonsillitis and he and Gladys thought they would lose their only living son.
