Massage and Bodywork by Alexis Doms
Licensed Massage Therapist located inside Back in Balance Chiropractic, LLC.
Question: I have issues laying flat on my back, do you have any accommodations for this?
Answer: Absolutely. I have a few options to work around this. You can lay face down the entire massage, we can have a side lying session (its super comfortable and most people fall asleep during side lying), or I have some bolsters that I can use to elevate your upper half into a reclined position. In the end it's up to you how you would like to receive the massage.

Petrissage
pe·tris·sage
verb
a massage technique characterized by kneading, squeezing, and lifting movements applied to the muscles and soft tissues of the body using the hands, fingers, or thumbs. It involves grasping and gently manipulating the muscle tissue in a rhythmic and alternating manner to promote relaxation, increase circulation, and alleviate tension. Petrissage is commonly used in various massage modalities, such as Swedish massage and deep tissue massage, and is typically performed following effleurage (long, gliding strokes) to further warm up the muscles and prepare them for deeper work.
Question: I got a new tattoo recently, am I okay to get a massage still?
Answer: You sure can! A fresh tattoo is considered broken skin, so I will avoid that area of your body to keep both of us safe. That being said, if the tattoo spans over the area that you are needing focus work on, then yes you should wait until its healed up. I can't wait to see your new artwork!
Reiki
RAY-kee
noun
The word "Reiki" is derived from Japanese: "Rei" means universal or spiritual energy, and "ki" refers to the life force energy that flows through all living things. Therefore, Reiki can be understood as "universal life force energy."
PEMF treatments are sooo relaxing! I personally enjoy going in after a long shift, it helps me recover quickly so I can be back on my feet the next day without aches and pains. Come and try it out!
Question: This is super embarrassing, but I think what I had for dinner is giving me gas today, do I need to reschedule?
Answer: Short answer, no, its okay. Long answer, we're only human, gas happens. If pressure hurts you, then I would suggest maybe postponing your massage but there really isn't any other reason I would suggest that. I can even work your abdomen if you'd like to help your organs relax.
Here's a funny fact for you, in Thai Yoga (also known as lazy mans yoga) a massage modality, there is a move known as the wind release... can you guess what it does...
Trigger Point
tri-gr-poynt
noun
a localized usually tender or painful area of the body and especially of a muscle that when stimulated gives rise to pain elsewhere in the body.
Question: I really don't like it when people touch my feet, is it something I need to just suck up?
Answer: Absolutely not! You and you alone are in charge of the massage, this is time that you paid for and if you don't want your feet worked then I will make sure that doesn't happen. I have a spot on the intake forms for you to put areas of the body to avoid, just put "feet" on there and I won't work them. You can add things to the "areas to avoid" section of the intake form such as bruises, cuts, areas that might be sunburnt, ticklish areas, or just areas that you don't feel comfortable having worked. You're in charge.
Myofascial
MY-oh-FASH-ul
noun
the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, and organs throughout the body. Myofascial tissue plays a crucial role in providing structural support, transmitting forces, and allowing for movement.
Question: I'm on my period, can I still get a massage?
Answer: Sure can! I know that it can be worrisome to get a massage while your on your cycle, just know that you're in a safe environment. Massage can help with the pains and aches that come with a period, as well as help calm your mind. If you're worried about leakage, you can leave on your bottoms to make you feel more secure.
Hydrotherapy
HY-droh-ther-uh-pee
noun
a therapeutic approach that involves the use of water for treating various conditions and promoting overall health and well-being. It encompasses a range of techniques, including immersion in water, water-based exercises, and the application of water in different temperatures (hot or cold) and pressures. Hydrotherapy can be utilized to alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, relax muscles, enhance range of motion, and promote relaxation and stress relief.
Question: I am so tired today, I might fall asleep... is that okay? What if I start snoring?
Answer: Personally, I take it as a compliment when my clients fall asleep! This shows me that you are comfortable and feel safe with me working on you. Not many people can sleep while being worked on because of the compromising position they're in. If you do fall asleep know that I won't change the massage at all, you'll still receive the best care I can give you. If you start snoring I won't judge you! This just means I'm doing my job well. Sweet dreams!
BAYLOR UNIVERSITY PUBLISHES LARGEST STUDY EVER ON MASSAGE THERAPY USE
July 2024
"Many people receive massage therapy and for many reasons. But according to a new study – the largest and most comprehensive ever conducted on the subject – the prevalence of visits to massage therapists is higher than one might have imagined and the reasons may be surprising."
“What our study shows is that it’s probably not helpful any longer to label massage as an ‘alternative’ therapy, with all of the marginality that the term conveys.”
“Licensed massage therapists ought to be respected as mainstream practitioners, whose profession provides a therapeutic approach not just to address pain and functional challenges but to foster wellness and overall well-being, physical and emotional.
Everyone can benefit from working with a skilled massage therapist. They’re the hidden gems in the healthcare system.” - Jeff Levin, Ph.D., M.P.H., University Professor of Epidemiology and Population Health. (Robert Rogers/Baylor University)

Adhesions
ad-HEE-zhuns
noun
fibrous bands of scar tissue that form between tissues and organs in the body, typically as a result of injury, surgery, inflammation, or trauma. These bands can cause tissues or organs to become stuck together, leading to restricted movement, pain, and other complications.
Question: This might be a silly question, you don't wear perfume do you?? I have a sensitive nose and some scents really cause me discomfort.
Answer: This is a great question! I don't wear perfume at all. I have scent sensitivity as well and so I understand completely how one whiff of something can ruin your whole day. I do diffuse essential oils however, so if there is something that bothers you just let me know and I will keep it out of the diffuser for the day of you appointment. Your comfort is of the utmost importance to me.
