UPDATE: Training has been postponed until tomorrow due to winds.
Dyess Fire Department will be conducting live fire training today at their fire pit. The pit is located near Market St and Air Base Rd. Residence may see and/or smell smoke during the training.
On Friday, May 10, 2024, just before noon, Tye Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 100 block of Indian Creek Drive in Tye. While responding, a large column of smoke was visible from afar, prompting an additional alarm for more hands to assist.
Upon arrival, crews encountered a heavily involved single-family residence and quickly acted to suppress the fire while also protecting neighboring structures under immediate threat.
Unfortunately, the property sustained significant damage. However, we are grateful to report that there were no injuries.
Our investigation revealed that the fire originated from a BBQ grill on the back porch, which then spread to the rest of the structure.
We would like to thank our mutual aid partners at Merkel Volunteer Fire Department, View Volunteer Fire Department, Abilene Fire Department, and Potosi Volunteer Fire Department, as well as the officers and deputies at Tye Police Department and Taylor County Sheriff's Office for their collaboration and support.
Our thoughts are with the homeowners during this challenging time.
On Wednesday, May 8, 2024, just before 5:30 PM, Tye Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 100 block of Concho St. in Tye. On arrival, crews encountered smoke and flames and acted swiftly to contain the situation. Regrettably, the structure has sustained significant damage.
Our initial investigation suggest that the fire was likely the result of a mobile phone left on the charger unattended, though this is still being looked into.
There we no reported injuries.
We would like to thank our mutual aid partners at Merkel Fire Department, View Fire Department, and Potosi Fire Department, as well as the officers and deputies from Tye Police Department and Taylor County Sheriff's Office, for their assistance in managing the scene.
Our thoughts are with the affected homeowners during this challenging time.

HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK:
127 PM CDT Fri May 3 2024
This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of west central
Texas.
DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight
Scattered thunderstorms, some severe, are expected to develop
this afternoon in the Big Country and Concho Valley, then move
southeast this evening. The Concho Valley, northward to Abilene,
Sweetwater, Anson, Roby, and Haskell has been upgraded to an
enhanced potential, for very large hail and damaging winds, along
with a tornado or two. A slight risk is in effect for the rest of
West Central Texas. Localized flooding is possible due to heavy
rainfall with the strong to severe storms.
DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday
Strong to severe storms will be possible again on Saturday
afternoon and evening, with all hazards being possible, including
large hail, damaging winds, and an isolated tornado. Storm
coverage will be more extensive, and more widespread heavy
rainfall and flooding will be possible.
SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...
Spotter activation will be needed this afternoon and evening, and
again Saturday afternoon and evening.
$$
On Thursday, 5/2/2024, a tornado touched down in the Hodges area, approximately 12 miles Northeast of Tye.
As the storm strengthened, a group of firefighters were standing by at the station awaiting updates, ready to roll out at a moment's notice, while a few others were closely monitoring the situation and keeping an eye on the tornado. This allowed us to be ready to put out an advance warning to the public if the tornado shifted direction toward Tye.
A few of our firefighters, while en route to the station, managed to capture these photos of the tornado.
Our thoughts are with anybody who was impacted by this destructive storm.
Two rounds of severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon through tonight. Very large hail, damaging winds and tornados are possible. A tornado was confirmed earlier in Knox county.
Please monitor the weather through tonight and take action as needed.
National Weather Service San Angelo TX
119 PM CDT Sat Apr 27 2024
..New SHORT TERM...
SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Sunday)
Issued at 119 PM CDT Sat Apr 27 2024
The main concern through the next 24 hours is the potential for
strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and overnight. We are
expecting two different rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms,
with the first beginning to develop across the Big Country early
this afternoon. A dryline is located west of our area, with an
increasingly unstable environment across much of the forecast area. A
few storms are beginning to develop across the Big Country and
across the South Plains region. The CAMS indicate that this activity
will continue to increase in coverage across the Big Country through
the afternoon hours, and this seems reasonable. Any storms that do
develop will likely quickly become strong to severe. The main
concerns with these storms will be very large, damaging winds, and
tornadoes.
A second, more widespread, round of strong to severe thunderstorms
is expected late tonight and into the early morning hours Sunday. A
Pacific cold front is forecast to approach the region from the west
late this evening and eventually collide with the dryline. The lift
from this collision along with upper level support as an upper level
trough approaches should result in the rapid development of
thunderstorms just west of our area between 8 PM and 10 PM. This
activity is then forecast to slowly spread east across the region
through the overnight hours. The development of a QLCS is possible,
and very large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes are possible with
this line. Most of this activity should be east of the region by
sunrise. In addition, locally heavy rain will be possible,
especially across our eastern counties, and flooding is possible
within any thunderstorms, especially on roadways and low lying areas.
Overnight lows will be in the mid 50s to near 60, with highs on
Sunday in the low to mid 80s.
Emergency Preparedness Tax Holiday this weekend.
https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/publications/98-1017.php
Expect severe weather this evening through the overnight hours. Large hail and a couple of tornadoes are possible for our area. The same will be possible for Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning.
Please have a way to get severe weather notifications. If you have not signed up for Code Red, please visit the City of Tye's website and sign up today! If you need help signing up, let us know so we can assist you.

This week is National Volunteer Week, commemorating 50 years! Since 1974, National Volunteer Week has been an opportunity to recognize the impact of volunteer service and the power of volunteers to tackle society’s greatest challenges, to build stronger communities and be a force that transforms the world.
Tye Fire Department would like to say THANK YOU to everyone who donates their time to make our community a better place!
We have recently seen an increase in bee sting related incidents in our area.
With spring in full swing, it's common to see honey bees swarming. If you find yourself in a situation where you're being attacked by a swarm:
- Stay Calm:
Remain as calm and quiet as possible. Avoid swatting or making sudden movements, as killing or swatting the bees will release pheromones and further agitate the swarm.
- Seek Shelter:
If you can, seek shelter indoors or in a closed vehicle.
- Cover Up:
Protect your face and head as much as possible. Use clothing, towels, or any available material to cover exposed skin.
- Move Slowly:
If you must move, do so slowly and steadily. Sudden movements can agitate the bees further.
- Call for Help:
If the situation becomes overwhelming, call emergency services for assistance.
Remember, bees typically swarm as a natural part of their reproductive cycle and are not usually aggressive. However, it's important to take precautions to ensure your safety.
Stay safe and bee-aware!
On September 11, 2018, an unknown airman walked into our station and said, "I want to be a volunteer firefighter." For almost 6 years, Ian Curry served our department with honor and integrity. While others were running away from the danger, Ian was running towards it. When Ian wasn't immediately available to us, he was out pond hopping, serving our great country.
Last night was Ian's last night with our department, as he prepares for his new life in Georgia. It's hard enough getting volunteers, but it's even harder getting volunteers of his caliber!
Ian, you were an asset not only to our department, but to our community as well. After all you’ve done for us, it’s only fair to let the rest of the world get their turn. We wish you the best in your future endeavors. Thank you for everything!
Be prepared. Have a way to get notifications!

Just after 1:00pm today, Tye Fire Department was dispatched to a travel trailer on fire on Jones County Road 408. Upon arrival, crews found the trailer already destroyed, and a large pile of oil field hard suction hose burning.
The owner stated they were using a cutting torch to remove the axles from the trailer. When they were done, they waited about 15 minutes to make sure nothing was burning, and left. About 20 minutes later, they noticed a large column of black smoke coming from the area and called 911.
Thankfully the fire was contained to the area of the travel trailer and hose, and did not spread into the open field. The owner stated the travel trailer had been sitting for years and was not being used.
Elevated fire conditions will be present today through the weekend. Monday brings a chance of severe weather.

At around 3:45 this afternoon, Tye Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire on Jones County Road 487, just inside the Jones/Taylor County line off of FM 707.
Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from the single story residence with flames visible through the front kitchen window.
As crews were pulling hose off the engine, the fire broke out of the window and began spreading along the ceiling of the front porch. Crews immediately began flowing water onto the fire and had it knocked down in under 10 minutes.
Thankfully there were no civilian injuries. However, one dog and two cats died despite resuscitation efforts of fire crews. The house itself sustained minor damage, but contents in the kitchen and living room areas were heavily damaged or destroyed.
Thank you to Merkel Volunteer Fire Department, Trent Volunteer Fire Dept, and Potosi Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance. Also thank you to Taylor Electric Cooperative, Inc. for their quick response to shut off power to the residence.
Fire appears to have started on the stove.
