Returning to the judging panel for the second year is our Festival Director, Craig O'Daniel! With his keen eye and passion for cinematography, Craig dedicates his time crafting videos as the City of Tyler's multimedia producer. He has experience working as a director on film sets, cinematographer, gaffer, camera operator, and editor in post-production. You can find Craig's work at the City of Tyler, Texas Government page. 🎥
Meet our 2024 judge and East Texas native, Lauren Cater! Lauren is a filmmaker currently working as a Video Producer at Dallas College. Formerly, she worked as an Associate Professor of Film Production at Middle Georgia State University before moving back to Texas. She earned her BA in Radio, Television, and Film and an MFA in Documentary Production and Studies from the University of North Texas. Lauren's passion lies in documentaries that give voice to often-overlooked stories and communities. Her work has been featured in film festivals, aired on PBS, and even found its way into classrooms across the country as teaching material. ✨
It's time to meet the judges for the 2024 festival! The first judge we'd like to introduce you to might be a familiar face for some of you. Justin Reese used to dream of being an independent filmmaker. Now, as a busy father, he sees himself as an independent film viewer. In his youth, he wrote, directed, and produced narrative and documentary short films before discovering his true calling as someone who doesn’t do that anymore. By day, he’s a technologist and case manager for a refugee resettlement organization, but by night, he’s asleep. He chaired the Tyler Film Festival in 2014 and 2015 and loves to see early work by promising creators. 🌟
ANNOUNCEMENT: We’re truly sorry for the inconvenience, but due to the severe weather conditions in Tyler earlier this week, many of our screeners are currently without power and unable to view the submitted films. As a result, we unfortunately have to delay our notification date to July 8. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.
In almost a month, we will notify filmmakers of which films were selected to be shown at the 2024 Tyler Film Festival! In the meantime though, Festival Director Craig O'Daniel shares a recent impactful short film he's watched year: In 2014, my wife and I watched "Helium" on the big screen as part of the Academy Award-nominated shorts. It's a powerful film that resonates with anyone who has had a family member struggle with their health or has a nurse in the family. The movie illustrates the impact a hospital caregiver has on someone facing death. "Helium" won the Oscar for live-action short film in 2014, and it's truly deserving.
Short films are unique because they're packed with creativity and storytelling in such brief moments. As we prepare for the 2024 Tyler Film Fest, let us know your favorite short film in the comments! Our Assistant Festival Director Payton Weidman's favorite is Meshes of the Afternoon, made by Maya Deren in 1943. 🔪

Our Story
Downtown Tyler Film Festival is a celebration of storytelling through film in East Texas. We accept and show short films from all around the world, but we have a special fondness for local independent works.
ABOUT DTFF
Downtown Tyler Film Festival was founded in 2011 as a venue for encouraging local filmmakers to hone their craft and introducing local cinephiles to new storytellers. We care deeply about putting on a quality festival that caters to filmmakers and cinephiles alike. Our festival is laid back and film-focused. Viewings take place at the Liberty Hall theater, with additional receptions and gatherings held around the square.
