Today we selected a folder from the Papers of Robert Winthrop Kean, labeled “Salk Vaccine, 1955.” Jonas Salk, who devoted his work to develop a against , opted not to patent or profit from the Salk Vaccine. Here we share a from then NJ Governor Robert B. Meyner concerned about vaccine distribution, along with Congressman Kean’s response. Today we had an unexpected guest visit us! A trustee and curator of the Caldwell Parsonage Museum in Union, NJ and Kean History Alumni, Anita Centeno stopped by to see some of our collection today. We loved hearing some wonderful stories about the history of our town and can’t wait to learn even more.

Dr. Elsa Gomez was the president of Kean College from 1989-1994. She was the first woman to earn the title at Kean. She was also the first Hispanic woman to lead a four-year liberal arts college in the United States. With the opening of our exhibit, Rarely Seen Photographs of the Extraordinary, the Galleries at Kean take this opportunity to discuss the topic of sustainability. Kean University is actively working toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. There are 17 interlinked global goals designed to create “peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.” This begins the 1st of 17 posts on our Instagram page, demonstrating how Kean University is implementing each of these goals in daily campus life, making the world a better place.
This post will highlight the steps taken by Kean University to diminish poverty and end it in all forms everywhere.

Located on the stunning historic site of New Jersey’s first elected Governor, William Livingston, the research experience offers one-on-one research support by our Research Library Associates, state of the art technology and tools, and access to primary source documents. It serves as a resource for curriculum support, researchers, scholars, and civilian historians alike.
Use of the Special Collections Research Library is free and open to all. We request that groups of larger than 10 call to arrange adequate guest support.
