Kean University Special Collections Research Library and Archive
We are open 9-5 during the semester!! Documents are added frequently and in-person visits are welcomed.
The Special Collections Research Library and Archive, known as SCRLA, offers 5 centuries of primary source documents to make your research projects stand out. Located in the Liberty Hall Academic Center, on the stunning historic site of New Jersey’s first elected Governor, William Livingston, the research experience offers access to digital materials and one-on-one support from our SCRLA Associate
🎉 Happy Birthday to Nancy Thompson, born on this day in 1886! 🎉
Nancy Thompson isn't just the namesake of our library; she was a beloved librarian who played a pivotal role at Kean University. Her dedication to the institution and its students left an indelible mark. 📚✨
When the library opened in 1959, a dedication ceremony was held, but Mrs. Thompson was too ill to attend. Swipe to read her heartfelt letter to the President of Kean, where she expressed her gratitude and honor for this recognition. 💌
During World War II, Nancy kept in touch with many students who went off to war, providing support and encouragement through her letters. These correspondences are a cherished part of our Nancy Thompson World War II Scrapbook Letter Collection, preserved in our archive today. 🇺🇸✉️
Swipe to dive into her story and see the impact she had on our community. Let's honor her legacy together!

Connection Found!
SCRLA and the Galleries at Kean share the stories of Japanese photography and Western artists from New Jersey.
Discover the intricate interplay of tradition and modernity during Japan’s Meiji era. Above is a portrait of a Buddhist Priest. Amidst rapid Westernization, religious practices underwent profound shifts. Government initiatives to consolidate power led to the separation of Shintoism and Buddhism, fostering State Shinto to bolster imperial authority. Yet, echoes of age-old rituals persisted, shaping art, literature, and societal norms.
Residing in Plainfield, Thorn dedicated decades from the 1860s to the 1890s to capture the Garden State’s enchanting scenes. While his name may not echo through modern times, his timeless albumen photos illuminate New Jersey’s rich historical tapestry, but without color applications.

🌟 In 1972, their excellence was nationally recognized as one of the top college crisis centers, paving the way for even greater milestones. By 1977, they celebrated their 50,000th call and welcomed their 1000th volunteer, a testament to their unwavering commitment to helping others. 🎉📞
