Composter Milestone - 500,000 lbs of food scraps have been composted.
By the end of 2015,
Food scraps were processed on 98 days
1105 buckets of food scraps were processed
44543 pounds of food scraps were processed
13040 pounds of wood scraps were used
Approximately 600 Kean faculty, students, and staff visited the composter, with an additional 170 visitors (approximate) from outside of the University.
By the end of this October, our composter had been running for 610 days, and processed total 439752 lbs food wastes. The composter also attracted 124 visiters including students and faculty during September and October.
The Kean University composting is processing everyday since the start of the Fall Semester....Updated monthly info to follow shortly!
Today, Day #551 of the composting, we surpassed 409,000 lbs of food & 104,000 lbs of wood shavings, both intercepted from unproductive landfilling!
Today, we reached another milestone. On day number 414, we surpassed 300,000 lbs. of food scraps composted. Actually, we ended the day at 300,930 lbs. after Will and I processed 1,188 lbs.
Today was the 400th day that food scraps have been processed in the composting system. In that period, 288,529 lbs. of food scraps and 77,143 lbs. of wood shavings have been processed into a remarkable compost! Our next target is 300,000 lbs., which we will probably reach very early in the autumn semester.
For those of you that would like to know where the Food Scraps Composting Laboratory is located at Kean University, the Google Maps photo is helpful. As you can see, it is centrally located in a very busy spot on campus. It is only a few hundred feet from the new residence halls and the library. It is immediately outside of the back of the University Center.
The spring 2013 semester has now come to a close insofar as the food scraps composting project is concerned. The figures for the semester are: 90 processing days, 56,543 lbs. of food scraps processed. To date figures are: 387 days, 283, 735 lbs. of food scraps processed (read diverted from a landfill or incinerator). Thanks to all who have helped make this project so successful.
Onward to the summer sessions!
In addition to Dr. Nick's ongoing research, compost produced at Kean is being used in research being conducted by the Greater Newark Conservancy and the Greater Newark Charter School. The GNC is studying row plots treated with the compost and row plots not treated with the compost to evaluate the effect on plant growth. Several different plants are being studied. The GNCS is studying raised beds with the same objective. A differenece is that some of the beds are treated with Kean's food scraps based compost and some are treated with commercially available leaf based compost. The control beds will have no soil amendment. Results will be shared as they become available.
Today was the 365th day that we've processed food scraps on campus! So, we've now reached one complete calendar year of composting! Onward to year 2! Our next goal is 300,000 lbs. or 150 tons, which we should achieve early in the autumn 2013 semester! Thanks to all, especially Willie C (for Composter, a la Willie Wonka) that have worked on this project and for making this level of achievement possible.
EBSCOhost: FOOD SCRAPS COMPOSTING LABORATORY.
The project at Kean was highlighted in the January 2013 issue of BioCycle.
The 2012 food scraps composting figures are:
Spring semester = 68,447 lbs.
Summer session = 9,410 lbs.
Autumn semester = 56,791 lbs.
Total for the calendar year = 134,648 lbs.
Total since starting the project = 227,191 lbs. in 297 days.
According to the U.S. E.P.A. WARM Model, this year the project was responsible for a 13.465 MTCO2E reduction and 39.048 million BTUs of energy saved
We will resume the project on 2 January 2013, although we probably will not actually process then. We will process whatever is generated during the winter sessions and then be back in full operation once the Spring 2013 semester begins.
Thanks to Will and all of the students (Bryan N., Joe, Judy, Pete, Bryan R., Bryan A., Matt, Pat, Ashley-Lynn, and others) who work so hard to make the project the remarkable success that is it.
Kean University composting projects reaches milestone
Recent press about our 100 ton achievement.
nj.com On the morning of Oct. 22, the University’s composting operation achieved a significant milestone: It processed its 100th ton of material.
Thanks to Will and all of the students who have made achieving this milestone possible. Special recognition goes to Kean University President, Dr. Farahi. Without his vision and wisdom to support this project, none of how it contributes to and exemplifies sustainability would have happened.
