April 6th checking in registrants at 9 am and starting the event at 10 am. AllJCU students, faculty, and staff are invited to the panel, “My First Trip to Israel/Palestine: sharing personal stories and reflections,” now rescheduled for November 28th, at 5-7pm at the Donahue Auditorium.
The panel will be moderated by Dr. Mindy Peden (Political Science) and feature Dr. Debby Rosenthal (English), Dr. Philip Metres (Peace, Justice, and Human Rights), Dr. Noah Bickart (Theology and Religious Studies), Dr. David Shutkin (Education) and Gia Hamed (senior, Political Science and PJHR major) as speakers.
PJHR Student Spotlight: Ella Grashoff ‘26
Ella is a sophomore IMC Major with minors in PJHR and entrepreneurship.
On campus, Ella is also a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, the Fundraising Chair for Alpha Kappa Psi, a retreat leader with campus ministry, and a tour guide.

Meghan is a senior PJHR and Psychology double major with a concentration in mental health services.
On campus she is the VP of Scholarship and Standards for the Panhellenic Council, the Relational Lead Peer Health Advocate in the Wellness Center, the President of Order of Omega, the Director of Career and Personal Development of Chi Omega, an Arrupe Social Justice Scholar, a member of Psi Chi Honors Society, a member of Alpha Sigma Nu Jesuit Honors Society, and a member of Best Buddies.

Celebrate the publication of Ochre & Rust: New Selected Poems of Sergey Gandlevsky (translated by Philip Metres), winner of the Stephen Mitchell Prize for excellence in translation.

Yesterday we spent the day in Westport and traveled to Achill Island this morning! Now on our way to Galway!!
Our final day in Belfast we visited the US Consulate, Belfast City Hall, and met with Bill Shaw! We are so sad to leave this beautiful place with even better communities & stories!

Yesterday we spent the day at the Dark Hedges, Bushmills Distillery, and Giant’s Causeway!! We’ll be heading for Newport tomorrow!
We spent our Monday exploring two differing communities in East Belfast. We also went to a poetry reading at Queen’s University featuring our very own- Dr. Metres, Dave Lucas, and Jenny Brown!!!👏👏
A new view of Belfast! We spent the day yesterday hiking Cave Hill, visiting the Titanic Museum, and St. George’s Market!
Day in Derry!!! Yesterday we traveled to Derry where we took a walking tour, visited the Museum of Free Derry, and met with Bishop McKeown!

Yesterday we visited Clonard Monastery and WAVE trauma center and learned about trauma during & after the Troubles. We also met with Sinn Fein leader Jim Gibney. We are on our way to Derry today!
Yesterday we had a busy & fun day at the Police Station of Northern Ireland, lecture at Queens University with Professor Dominic Bryan, meeting with , and the Good Vibrations musical!

Day 2: Today we did the Falls/ Shankill Tour with our amazing tour guides!
Day 1 in Belfast: off the plane and had a tour of Queens University of Belfast and a bus tour around Belfast!!
The last PJHR Student Spotlight of the spring semester is Aliyah Shamatta! Aliyah is a Communications major with a concentration in Digital Media, with minors in PJHR and Leadership Development. On campus, she is involved with WJCU and Student Government, as Class of 2024 Senator. Aliyah is also a member of Kappa Delta and the orientation staff. After college, she plans to work with content creation and media management. Follow along with her takeover today!

Today, we would like to share Dr. Philip Metres’ opinion on the importance of the PJHR program.
Dr. Metres has been at John Carroll for 21 years. He is currently an English professor as well as the Director of the Peace, Justice, and Human Rights Program. Dr. Metres teaches two PJHR classes here: Israeli and Palestinian Literature and Irish Literature and Film. We would like to thank him for his continuous devotion towards the PJHR program!

This week’s spotlight goes to Juliana Kupetz! Juliana is a major in Political Science with a minor in PJHR. On campus, she is an Academic Development Director of Kappa Alpha Theta and a member of the pre-law society. Juliana hopes to attend law school after graduation to specialize in international law and advocate for more productive interactions between nations.
