The Pennsylvania Union Leadership Academy (ULA) is a series of four short non-credit courses for local union activists, leaders, and community allies.
The Labor School is Penn State University’s outreach program to the Pennsylvania labor movement. The Labor School is based on the idea that union leaders need to be informed and knowledgeable to perform the critical role they play in the U.S. system of labor-management relations. The program exists to provide low-cost education and training programs for unions in Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia Uni

Strategies for a New Labor Landscape:
Strengthening Member Commitment
The landscape for all unions--public and private sector--continues to shift. The attack on labor and unions is not going to stop with JANUS or even after the recent mid-term elections. What is the labor landscape here in southwestern PA? And what are practical strategies to strengthen member commitment?
The LABOR School at Penn State and the Allegheny-Fayette CLC are convening unions in southwest PA to innovate and learn from each other as we build power and address the following:
What are newest threats and legal challenges to prepare for?
How do we strengthen member commitment as it gets harder to win at the bargaining table?
What are unions doing to help communicate the value and importance of being union?
We will focus on applied research, hear best practices, share across locals and plan for implementing new ideas to strengthen member commitment in the current moment of challenge and opportunity for labor.
Who should participate? Officers, Staff, Executive board members, and other key member leaders from private and public sector unions, labor councils and federations
