Happy Guru Purnima!
Guru Purnima is a deeply significant and auspicious occasion in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions, celebrated to honor and express gratitude towards spiritual and academic teachers, mentors or gurus.
The term Guru is derived from the Sanskrit words Gu (darkness) and Ru (remover), signifying the guru’s role in dispelling ignorance and bringing enlightenment.
Guru Purnima is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July).
Ways to celebrate Guru Purnima
🙏🏼 Acknowledge & Thank Your Mentors:

🧘🏻♀️ Meditation & Yoga

♥️ Charity & Seva

Ayurveda ABC: Pranayama
Pranayama is the practice of breath control in yoga, and it holds a significant place in Ayurveda for its numerous health benefits. The term “pranayama” is derived from the Sanskrit words “prana” (life force or vital energy) and “ayama” (extension or control). Thus, pranayama means the extension or control of the life force.
Benefits and Importance:
😌 Reduces Stress: Pranayama calms the nervous system, reduces stress, and promotes mental clarity.
⚖️ Balances Doshas: Different pranayama techniques are used to balance the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) in the body, which are essential for maintaining health and preventing disease.
💨 Cleanses the Nadis: Nadis are energy channels in the body. Pranayama helps to clear these pathways, ensuring the smooth flow of prana.
🫁 Enhances Lung Capacity: Regular practice increases lung capacity and improves respiratory efficiency.
🔥 Improves Digestion: By enhancing the oxygen supply and reducing stress, pranayama supports better digestion and metabolic function.
Common Pranayama Techniques:
🧘🏻♂️ Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing): cleanses energy channels (nadi) , balances the nervous system and harmonizes the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
🧘🏻♂️ Kapala Bhati (Skull Shining Breath): energizes the mind, detoxifies the lungs, relieves mucus in the head and sinuses.
🧘🏻♂️ Bhramari (Bee Humming Breath): awakens nada (inner sound), calms the mind, aids in better sleep.
🧘🏻♂️ Ujjayi (Victorious Breath): reduces anxiety, improves control of prana and emotions (=victorious), relieves mucus and congestion
If you are interested in learning how to practice Pranayama, I invite you join me to my weekly evening Breathwork Circles on Fridays at 5:30-6:15pm at my office downtown Petaluma (link in bio 👆🏼)

Ayurveda ABC: RITUCHARYA
Ritucharya is an important concept in Ayurveda that refers to the seasonal routines and lifestyle practices designed to maintain balance and harmony within the body and mind throughout the changing seasons. The term „Ritucharya“ comes from the Sanskrit words Ritu (season) and Charya (to follow; routine or regimen).
Ayurveda emphasizes the need to adapt our daily routines, diet, and lifestyle to the rhythms of nature. By aligning our habits with the natural seasonal cycles, we harmonize our body’s rhythms with the natural world leading to reduction in risk of seasonal illnesses and imbalances, strength the body’s natural defenses and equilibrium in our doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha).
If you are interested in creating a Ritucharya for Pitta season, the season we are in now, I would be happy to support you by booking a consultation (see link in bio👆🏼).

Pitta is one of the three doshas or biological energies in Ayurveda, alongside Vata and Kapha. It represents the combination of the Fire 🔥 and Water 🌊 elements.
The “gunas” or qualities to describe Kapha include:
🔥 Hot
🪶 Light
🧴 Oily/unctuous
🚲 Mobile/spreading
🔪 Sharp/fast
💦 Liquid/wet
With today’s heat, it’s hard to ignore some of these gunas reflected in the environment. The temperatures are hot, the influence of the sun is sharp and mobile/spreading, the air is light. If you’re like me and perspire, sweat can cause moisture on the skin and oiliness in the hair. These qualities are all an indication that we’re entering Pitta season! ☀️
Zooming in, Pitta also influences our daily rhythms. Pitta times of day typically occur from approximately 10am to 2pm and then again about 10pm to 2am. Midday Pitta time is ideal for chores, to get work done, be productive and eat lunch, taking advantage of this time of transformation. The nighttime Pitta period is a time for restorative sleep so body and mind can digest what has been taken in over the course of the day.
Expanding our perspective, Pitta also manifests as a significant period in our lives, typically our productive “career” years.
If you would like to learn more about balancing Pitta during the summer by blending and cooking with spices, please join me for the Ayurvedic 6 Tastes Spice Blending Workshop at on Sunday, June 16 at 5:30pm (see link in bio)

In Ayurveda, “Dosha” refers to one of the three fundamental energies or biological forces that govern physiological and psychological processes in the body and mind. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha is composed of specific combinations of the five elements—ether, air, fire, water, and earth—and exhibits unique qualities and functions.
Doshas are fundamental to understanding an individual’s constitution, known as “Prakruti,“ and their current state of imbalance, referred to as ”Vikruti.“
𝟏. 𝐕𝐚𝐭𝐚: Composed of the elements of air and ether Vata governs movement, communication, creativity, and the nervous system. It is characterized by qualities such as dry, light, cold, rough, subtle, and mobile. When balanced, Vata promotes vitality, enthusiasm, and creativity. However, an excess of Vata can lead to symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues, and instability.
𝟐. 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚: Composed of the elements of fire and water, Pitta governs digestion, metabolism, intellect, and vision. It is characterized by qualities such as hot, sharp, light, oily, and intense. When balanced, Pitta promotes intelligence, courage, and a strong digestive fire. However, an excess of Pitta can lead to symptoms such as irritability, inflammation, acidity, and skin conditions.
𝟑. 𝐊𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐚: Composed of the elements of water and earth, Kapha governs structure, lubrication, immunity, and emotional stability. It is characterized by qualities such as heavy, slow, cool, oily, smooth, and stable. When balanced, Kapha promotes strength, stability, and nurturing qualities. However, an excess of Kapha can lead to symptoms such as lethargy, weight gain, congestion, and attachment.
Ayurvedic practices aim to balance the doshas through lifestyle modifications, dietary adjustments, herbal remedies, and therapeutic treatments tailored to the individual’s constitution and imbalances. By restoring harmony to the doshas, Ayurveda promotes overall health and prevents disease.
