Annually on the 22nd day of the ninth lunar month of the Bhutanese/Tibetan calendar, the Buddhist community worldwide celebrate Lhabab Düchen (Descending Day of Lord Buddha).
Lhabab Düchen commemorates Shakyamuni Buddha’s descent from the Trayastrimsha (Heaven of the Thirty-Three Devas), where he had gone seven years after his enlightenment to offer teachings to his mother, who had died and was residing there. This miraculous day later came to be known as as Lhabab Düchen whereby Lha translates to “god” and Bab translates to “descend.” Düchen translates as “great occasion.”
On this auspicious day, both positive and negative karma are multiplied "ten million times." Engaging in virtuous actions, practicing generosity, attending rituals, and performing sadhanas are highly recommended. A symbolic act such as lighting a butter lamp can add significance to the occasion.
