I spent the last four days working at Richwoods High School. On the first day I met a kid in my second session that hit me hard. He stated, “this is Peoria. You either go to jail or you die in the streets.” At that moment I was locked in on him. He never missed a session this week, attended all his classes, and showed up to mentoring first all week. Today he said he is going to start running track again. We still got work to do, but he has inspired me more than he knows.
In our first group we had two young men who struggle with English, today one of the students took on the roll of tutoring them. They welcomed his help.
Instead of running away from youth who struggle, run towards them. Behind the mask of their behavior, there is a broken kid waiting on us to help turn their broken pieces to a masterpiece.
On your way to success the three F’s you will experience are Fear, Failure, and Frustration. Most people give up in one of the three experiences. Just know all three are apart of the process.

Today I had the opportunity to spend 6hrs having real conversations with students about overcoming trauma. Black and Brown students don’t get to have this conversation often. I was blown away by the response and the openness of the students today.
Here’s the teachers response, “Oh and thank you so much! You have been the talk of the school! Everyone wants to know who my guest was. Lol you are such a great asset to Black mental health. Bless you!”

When we talk about our youth, I go hard. You can't teach passion but you will experience it in the room with me.

Adults care about race more than our youth do. That's the problem.
Education is one of the keys to reduce the school to prison pipeline.
I'm in Jacksonville, Florida Mid-October, I have a Thursday available for a middle school or high school.
We have to get them before the system gets them.
Know what you are up against and plan accordingly. No youth is impossible to reach.
Working with our youth is not for the weak. We don't get to pick their friends, community, or household dynamics.
What if you are not reaching new levels because you are being loyal to the wrong people, places, and things?
