When Christ sent his disciples to “the ends of the earth,” there was no doubt he had places like Papua New Guinea in mind. Since 1974, Goroka Baptist Bible College has graduated nearly 500 national students to be pastors, teachers, and Christian leaders throughout the country. A lot has happened since 1974 and expansion is needed to keep the ministry growing and thriving! This summer, ABWE is launching The Goroka Project to help build a new clinic facility, theological training facilities, and additional classrooms to help teach and train more students for the sake of the gospel. Easter Sunday represents the pinnacle of our faith as Jesus triumphed over death and made a way for us to be with him. This triumph changed the lives of his 12 disciples, who because of this amazing hope began the work of missions. He is risen! Hallelujah! Happy Easter!
It's Good Friday. We should be pondering Jesus' suffering on the cross for our sins and the immense weight of his sacrifice, but I wonder if you have ever paused to think about the two criminals who died next to him. I might be slightly getting ahead of the calendar here, but I spent some time in Luke 2 this week reflecting on Simeon’s words after he saw Jesus. “For my eyes have seen your salvation that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” What Simeon waited for in the coming of Messiah is now our ministry to the nations. The gospel is the only consolation in life as we live with sin, loss, death, betrayal, cancer, addiction, you name it. When we proclaim the gospel, we give hope, rest, comfort, encouragement, the consolation that Luke’s account talks about. Let us in word and deed constantly unveil the truth of the gospel. May we be the light to the nations this Christmas, in 2023, and in the time the Lord gives us to serve him.
