When I look at Calendula blossom, it looks like it’s smiling at me.

There will always be a new synthetic compound claiming to reverse aging. Soft. Cushy. Luscious. Effortless. And her ingredient deck reads like a precious, life-giving treatment serum.

But I am describing our Effortless Cleanser: Radiant Glow.

This cleanser is a hybrid oil/gel emulsion cleanser. I use this term because we use nutrient-rich cleansing oils to pull dirt, debris, and makeup from the skin and blend them with humectants, astringents, and enzymes. This blended cleanser leaves the skin supple, moist, and dewy — this cleanser is a treatment all on its own.

Safflower + Sunflower oil: Our two favorite raw and freshly pressed seed oils for cleansing are in perfect balance here to decongest pores and minimize their appearance by attaching to our oxidized oils so they can be easily wiped away. We blend hydrating hydrosols, detoxifying teas, renewing honey, and healing resins to soften, soothe, brighten, and deeply hydrate.

When I started formulating products, I was clear that I wanted to also inspire rituals around them. There is power and change in the act of ritual. When we ritualize a simple task - like cooking a meal, sweeping the floor, or caring for our skin - we send messages to our whole human system. The practice of careful awareness with love and gratitude takes a simple task and turns it into a powerful moment with compounding effects. All change is a series of small steps, isn’t it?

I believe that we are all energy and our thoughts can create energetic shifts within our nervous system. Here we have an opportunity to place a beautiful ritual into our daily lives with these small moments of self-care.

It may come as no surprise to all of you but the 10 minutes or so that I take for myself to cleanse my skin and envelope myself in the potent magic of plants, those moments are the most grounding moments of my day. I feel more connected to my spirit when I am lovingly taking care of myself.

This Collection of Herbal Compounds represents my transformative journey of standing in my truth and not silencing my heart as an herbalist creating skin care. As a highly sensitive person at the helm of a small yet impactful business, navigating the corporatized beauty and wellness industry machine has become a familiar challenge. The fact that plants cannot be patented makes them less profitable compared to synthetic alternatives. Well, summer has pretty much engulfed North America. Do you ever have those days when, for whatever reason, you just can’t escape the sun? Whether it’s outdoor chores or afternoon garden parties or even just running errands around town. Sometimes we can’t avoid being outside ALL DAY. That is a side effect of it being summer!

If you're curious about whether I use Sun Serum, let me satisfy your curiosity by saying that I absolutely do. Sun Serum has consistently won the "Best Seasonal Rotation" award at my personal award ceremony held in my house, with an audience of just one: ME.

When it comes to human health - especially skin health - I firmly believe that plants know best.

When you begin to align yourself with Nature, you inevitably align yourself with the seasons. Plants feel and live by the natural circadian rhythms of the earth, perhaps more than any other living organism.

Using plants for skin medicine is much like eating seasonally. We ask the same questions: What is fresh and growing right now? What is thriving and blooming according to Nature’s deep and unstoppable knowing?

One of the BEST examples of this deep, unstoppable knowing is the way in which the earth provides us with plant allies and their remedies precisely when we need them. Summertime plants are an incredible example of this synergy. In summer, plants rich in carotenoids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins become naturally abundant. They offer our skin potent protection, repair, and brightness for the season. These plants even possess antioxidants that absorb and transform UV radiation. It's as though they were designed precisely for us to enjoy this sun-filled season. Can you see where this is headed?

SURPRISINGLY COMPLEX!

Cleansers: a deceptively simple, yet commonly misunderstood, step in your ritual. In an era when we have become obsessed with cleanliness and stripping away every layer of perceived ‘grime', it can be confusing to navigate the world of cleansers and to know what’s truly healthy.

The primary difference in our approach to cleansing versus a conventional brand is that none of our cleanser formulas include foaming agents. All foaming cleansers – no matter how gentle or plant-based – negatively affect the skin’s lipid barrier and microbiome. The squeaky-clean feeling after using them is the absence of your skin’s beneficial oils. Having a well-established lipid barrier and diverse skin flora are key to skin health and longevity. Make friends with this important part of your skin rather than washing it away!

LAUREL SKIN CLEANSERS
Each of our four oil-based Cleansers removes makeup, sunscreen, and daily pollutants while providing essential nourishment. If you’re new to Laurel Cleansers, there is often a transition period that is dependent on how much barrier and microbiome damage needs to be restored. Stay the course. It's worth it!

CLEANSER USAGE
I cannot overstate the importance (and pleasure!) of a thorough cleansing massage. Too often I see people moving through their cleanse so quickly that the product barely has time to work before it’s being hastily rinsed off! What if you took your time massaging the emulsion onto your skin, letting the oils and extracts do what they know how to do. Notice the slip of our Cleansers on your skin; connect to what you feel on and below the surface, think about how it’s supporting your skin’s optimal health. Finally, press a warm, wet cloth to your skin and let the heat relax muscle tension before wiping away the day. Trust me, this way is far superior - it’s something I genuinely look forward to at the end of each day. Splashing water on your face to remove your cleanser is just NOT IT. Slow down and care for your skin, like your very best friend who has come to stay for the weekend.

There is evidence that plants have feelings. They can and do respond to external emotional stimuli; they are living organisms, after all. We are all just a mass of energetic matter in different configurations. My brain wraps around this factoid rather easily, how about yours?

One of the ways that whole plant skincare is different from other “plant-based” products lies in the medicinal compounds - their quality, quantity, and bioavailability.

In our line, Balms take the place of cream moisturizers. Creams and lotions contain close to 80% water, along with stabilizers, skin softeners, emulsifiers, and preservatives. The actual percentage of beneficial ingredients in creams often ends up as less than 10%.
DAY BALM is our lightest weight formula to melt into the skin quickly and contains 28 active botanical ingredients, the most of any of our Balms. Its raw, organic whole plants were carefully chosen to help protect the skin from daily environmental stressors including damage and inflammation from UV exposure. Its scent is light and sweeps across the skin leaving a breeze of neroli and lemon balm.

Our sunflower seed oil is pressed fresh for us every few weeks. It holds vibrant life and is full of enzymes that are brilliant at cleansing. The lipid molecules attach to debris and oxidized sebum in our pores, helping to loosen and pull congestion away from the skin.

Do we spend more than 5x the commercial price for our organic, cold-pressed, raw and unrefined oil? Yes, yes we do. But it’s because it makes that much of a difference.

Yes, this is Cornflower.

Since launching our newest mask in May, we have received hundreds of notes in all forms, shapes, and sizes sharing the most amazing feedback about this mask. One interesting observation we heard from MANY of you was how unexpected the firming qualities of this mask are. I chuckle to myself when I think about it. In my head, I'm thinking, “Well yeah, didn’t I say it was firming?!” LOL

A key component found in Cornflower is pectin, a type of polysaccharide that provides a protective and moisturizing layer on the skin. Pectin helps to improve the skin's texture and elasticity, making it appear smoother, bouncier, and more youthful. The petals also contain tannins, which have astringent properties that help to tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of pores. They really walk their talk, in this case.

So, there you go. That’s how that works and why that’s happening. It’s amazing what you can do with plants when you know what you’re doing!

The sun is perhaps the strongest and most incredible energy force in existence - comprised of a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, from infrared to ultraviolet, with invisible light waves being a significant component.
