TOMAS DELOS REYES Mixes Us an ICFF Cocktail


We asked NYC-based mixologist Tomas Delos Reyes to design us a cocktail inspired by what he saw at ICFF. The result? A slick and fiery drink called the Red Thread, inspired by a NoLiTa atelier of the same name.

Surface: Out of everything exhibited at this year's ICFF, what resonated with you about The Red Threads?

Tomas Delos Reyes: For me, it was their philosophy of “The Red Threads” taken from Asian mythology, and the way they apply that into the framework and aesthetic of their furniture. Their hand-crafted pieces, using sustainably managed timber resources and marrying modern and minimalist design with an Asian and American sensibility, spoke loudly to a style that I’ve developed an affinity for in the past decade

Surface: Take us through the 'design process' of this cocktail.

Tomas Delos Reyes: Each ingredient, from the Hakushu Japanese whiskey I’ve chosen, to the supporting ingredients and the garnish, is nostalgic, taking me back to hiking in the Japanese Alps just before touring through the Hakushu distillery. Each subsequent ingredient helps paint the picture with balance and complexity. Ultimately, the ingredients you choose are vital to the craftsmanship of each libation and how it’s received. Everything from the style of garnish to the first sip where your sense of smell reacts to the drink is all part of the process.

Surface: How would you relate the design of a cocktail to the design of a more permanent physical object, like furniture?

Tomas Delos Reyes: The goal of creating a cocktail as well as a piece of furniture is to create an experience. The recipe of a great cocktail is simple yet robust and expressive will stand the test of time, just as a fine piece of furniture will bring you to a place of comfort and solitude.
