Trailtalk
Trailtalk is taking therapy off the couch and onto the trail. Nature is our main therapy too. We also Therapylite® is our model of care. It feels less clinical.
Trailtalk is shedding light on the shame and stigma of seeking mental health services for active, functional people. Our signature walks and talks, and roving office makes emotional care accessible, acceptable and affordable. It feels right. We all need and deserve routine emotional care just like we do physical care. Better emotional health just takes one step. Call us and let's walk and talk about it.
Start the week off right! We especially like rule 3. Try re-organizing your day and see how it impacts your productivity!
5 Bad Habits You Need to Eliminate According to Bruce Lee’s Wisdom Your life can be simpler — if you’re willing to do the work.
Former Ohio State football player Harry Miller recently retired from football due to mental health struggles. Yet another athlete shining light on the stigma of mental health in sports.
“You look around and you say, ‘something’s going on right now; Something needs to happen...The problem is that nobody has to say something—and that is precisely why somebody has to say something.”
Harry spoke with TODAY about his decision:
Ohio State football player says he’s retiring, details mental health struggles in deeply personal post “I am a life preserved by the kindness that was offered to me by others when I could not produce kindness for myself,” Harry Miller wrote on Twitter.
Our five external senses (vision, hearing, touch, taste, and smell) as well as our internal senses (vestibular, interoceptive, and proprioceptive) are our gateway to the world!
When/if these receptors in the nervous system malfunction, our association with everyday items can change. Sounds can become too loud, textures uncomfortable, lights too bright, etc.
Check out this great article from Psychology Today to learn more about Sensory Processing Disorder.
Sensory Processing Disorder Sensory processing disorder—also known as SPD or sensory integration disorder—is a term describing a collection of challenges that occur when the senses fail to respond properly to the outside world. Though the condition has gained recognition in recent years, it is widely debated and is not cur...
Do you need sound or silence? Some things to think about:
1. How do you react to organized sound? (i.e. music, singing, etc.)
2. How do you react to unorganized sound? (i.e. clanking, loud crowds, off-tune music)
3. How do you react to silence?
4. Can you change your mood by changing your "sound setting"?
Do you ever feel like a thousand different things are happening at once? Like your five senses are constantly being triggered? A shift to a minimalist lifestyle (or at least a minimalist headspace) can help with sensory overload.
Sensory integration issues can also be improved with noise-canceling headphones. Physically tuning out sound can help your cognition and improve focus.
Let's talk about minimalism. A minimalist lifestyle is focused on consuming less and living with more specific, meaningful items in your life.
While you might see some immediate benefits on your bank statement, your mental health will also thank you! The decluttering of our homes and living spaces will also declutter our minds. Improve your headspace with fewer decisions and fewer distractions.
Happy Trails!
What is minimalism and why is it a current trend? This week, we'll discuss minimalism, decluttering our space and our minds, and sensory overload.

Boundaries make the best neighbors. Here are some Tips from the Trail if you need some fence-mending:
1. Consider how you do boundaries. Is your fence line too flexible? Is it too rigid?
2. Notice how you interact with your loved ones and colleagues. Are you the easy-going guy? Or are you known as the “my way or the highway” person? I’m not saying one is better than the other, I’m just suggesting the flexion and tension ratio in our fences significantly impact our relationships. We have to come to awareness before we can make a change.
3. Talk to a friend or family member about what boundaries mean to them. You might be surprised what you can learn from others when we broach these types of topics.
It's important to build and maintain your boundaries. Check in on your "fences" from time to time. How is the tension? How is the flexion?
Read up on our newest blog for more on building better boundaries.

Ending relationships can be a tough road to navigate. We found a great article by Joshua Becker on Becomingminimalist.com where Josh discusses "never having to cross the street."
In brief, are you conducting yourself in a way where you won't have to cross the street if you see the other person? (See our last post!)
Happy Trails and Happy Friday!
It can be tough navigating the end of a relationship. If you find yourself in an ethical dilemma, try this technique!
The "don't cross the street" mindset applies to professional relationships, friendships, and romantic relationships.
We all witnessed the saga of Mikaela Shiffrin unfold over the past week. Mikaela was considered a frontrunner in her Olympic skiing event and faced intense scrutiny when she error'd on her run. Simone Biles, who also faced similar scrutiny during the Summer Games, supported Mikaela.
It's important for us to celebrate others’ successes rather than reveling in their demise or defeat. Extend kindness!
Happy Trails :)

There seems to be a disconnect between high-performing athletes and mental health resources. How does Team USA plan to help their athletes?
"Athletes will have access to therapists and psychiatrists throughout the Olympic Village and venues, ability to attend individual or group therapy sessions and a crisis hotline they can call, Dr. Jessica Bartley, the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee's director of mental health services, said during a media summit in October 2021." - ABC News (🔗link in bio)
Is this enough? What do you think?
It's refreshing to see some mental health news coverage on this round of the Olympics. After Simone Biles brought international recognition to mental health this past summer, we've seen a large push from athletes and organizations to eliminate the stigma behind mental health and therapy. Olympic athletes now have access to group therapy, wellness apps and a crisis hotline during the games. A good start, but a long way to go.

“Everyone gets frustrated. I think the best way to deal with it is to not set such a strict time frame for completion, and always look for small victories and progress in the projecting process. These can be super small- even just learning new micro beta or feeling better on a move. I get frustrated and down on myself, but then try to come back with a more open mind.”

“Anxiety has also been a factor that has really made me struggle. There are bad days where everything just feels overwhelming and I feel like my self worth is really low. But it also has taught me a lot. I don't know if I would be so obsessive as I am without it, nor if I would appreciate the presence that I find in climbing. It's a part of me and learning to manage it has made me stronger.”
