Coralville Fire Station 1 is home to one of the Johnson County Iowa Emergency Management Agency & Commission drones. Some of our fire officers are FAA-licensed UAV pilots and spent yesterday afternoon practicing with the brand new drop hook attachment. The drop hook can be used to release a life preserver/life ring (shown here), radio, or other important equipment to somebody in otherwise unreachable or life-threatening conditions.

Yesterday marks the one-year anniversary of the tornado that tore through our community. We flew the same flight path to show how much Coralville has bounced back from the damage. Most if not all homes and businesses have been restored to their pre-tornado condition. We thank our volunteers for responding to the 30 calls for service that evening. Also we'd like to use this opportunity to remind everybody to take the tornado sirens seriously. They are designed to notify individuals who are outside to seek shelter immediately.

Don't forget! CFD pancake breakfast is coming up fast! With the construction at the west end of 5th Street, access to the fire station may be best coming from the 12th Avenue side.

Time change tonight! As we spring forward, it's a good time to change your batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (even if they are hardwired to your home).

Also, it's a good idea to check the date code on the back of each detector. For smoke alarms, 10 years is the recommended lifespan. For CO detectors, 7 years is the recommended lifespan. If you have questions, give us a call!
