Blanco is a sweet 1 year old golden
retriever working on perfecting his obedience and walking!

He's overall very mellow and lives with two very young kids who keep him occupied. We're focusing on leash walking, place command, and not eating the kids food (even though they like to share with him)

Blanco is catching in very quickly but sometimes gets a little stubborn. We will continue working and making it a more pleasant experience for him

Prong collars are tools meant for teaching.

There is definitely a right and wrong way to use this tool, just like there is a right and wrong way to use a power drill. These tools are meant to be used with gentle pressure and positive reinforcement as well as occasional corrections.

Prong collars should not be used with extreme pulling or pressure. The goal is to help your dog understand what it means when the collar gets a little tighter or looser and how they should be reacting with it.

Prong collars and slip leashes should be sitting high on the neck to avoid important organs and allow your dog to feel pressure vs no pressure clearly.

Ask any prong or slip leash related questions and I will answer as much as I can!

Summer is a hard time to get your pups out and about, make sure you teach them how to wear and walk in shoes!
-
Shoes are a great way to be able to still get your dog on walks and outdoor training without burning their paw pads.
-
I’ve been asked before “don’t shoes make your dog hotter because they sweat from their paws?” The answer is: yes, but they will be able to keep your dogs feet safe from 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Make walks and activities shorter during these hot days but be sure that your dogs are protected!

Puppies are always so fun to teach basic commands, they pick up in them so quickly!
-
Repetition is key when teaching any dog (especially puppies) something new! Before expecting your dog to just know what to do, show them with luring and rewards!

Tug-o-war is rewarding!

Slip lead placement matters!
-
Most dog training and walking is done on the left side of the body. Therefore, it’s important that any tool that applies pressure, especially slip leads, are put on properly.
-
For your dogs safety and results you want the slip lead to be able to tighten and release as you apply pressure and your dog responds to it (walking toward the pressure to release it).
-
Remember to always keep your slip lead or prong collar high and tight around the neck. Not tight enough to choke your dog but tight enough that it isn’t slipping down.
-
If you choose to train on the right side reverse this tip!

Are these statues or dogs?
-
The advanced group lessons sometimes go to new places and practice in busy scenarios with all breeds!
-
You might be wondering - why are these dogs sitting on those boxes? In new areas I like to push dogs to do unfamiliar and sometimes slightly uncomfortable positions to practice obedience in all aspects as well as confidence building!

Happy Saturday! Keep your pups cool as the temperature rises the next couple of weeks!
-
Remember that heat exhaustion can be deadly or cause severe damage to internal organs. Make sure your dogs are hydrated and cool enough.
-
Signs of heat exhaustion: red eyes, severe panting or trouble breathing, discolored gums, overly red ears or other skin.

Beginning steps for heel!
-
There are a few steps to teaching a proper heel. Let’s start with heel position and transition to heel in motion.
-
A proper heel is extremely important to teach dogs how to walk by your side without pulling and straining your own body!

Are you giving your working breed enough work?
-
Working breeds are breeds that are meant for herding hunting or retrieving. More often than not owners fail to give enough work to their working breeds to satisfy their intellectual needs. Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise!
-
This means actually CHALLENGING your dogs and not over rewarding them. Don’t settle for less than they can actually achieve and they will thank you for it with a calm mindset and relaxed body!

Not my best video, trying to teach Buddha how to bow as part of his physical therapy!
-
Buddha is very used to go straight down from a standing position so he instinctively wants to do that. However, he’s doing a great job learning how so far! He can only hold himself up for a couple of seconds before getting tired.
-
I am using this to help him regain muscles and mobility in his lower back/legs. He is walking pretty well right now but struggles to hold himself up on his back legs while pooping, stretching, or shaking. It’s a long road to recovery but he’s really making amazing progress!
