The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day or July 4th, has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941. However, the tradition of Independence Day celebrations dates back to the 18th century and the time of the American Revolution. On July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted for independence, and just two days later, delegates from the 13 colonies approved the Declaration of Independence, a significant document penned by Thomas Jefferson. Since 1776, July 4th has been commemorated as the inception of American independence, marked by a variety of festivities including fireworks, parades, concerts, and informal family gatherings and barbecues.

The Significance of Memorial Day: A Day of Remembrance and Reflection
Memorial Day, observed annually on the last Monday of May, is one of the most solemn American holidays. Originally established to honor soldiers who died during the Civil War, it has evolved to commemorate all U.S. military personnel who have died in military service. The day serves not only as a time for national reflection and remembrance but also highlights the sacrifice of those who have given the ultimate price for their country’s freedom.

National Police Week is a pivotal observance that highlights the courage and sacrifices of law enforcement officers, offering a crucial moment for reflection and recognition. For mental health professionals supporting this community, it is an opportunity to underscore the psychological burdens that officers often carry as a result of their duties. Police officers are frequently exposed to high-stress situations, critical incidents, and trauma, which can have lasting impacts on their mental health. This week serves as a reminder of the importance of providing robust mental health resources and support systems to help officers manage stress, prevent burnout, and maintain their mental well-being, ultimately ensuring they can serve their communities effectively and with compassion.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serve in the United States today. Each year, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial adds new names to the wall. The average is 163 deaths per year. Fallen law enforcement officers represent all levels of law enforcement, including local, state, federal, tribal, and military law enforcement. They are family members, husbands, wives, parents, sons, and daughters.

National Military Spouse Appreciation Day is a presidentially-approved holiday celebrated on the Friday before Mother’s Day in May. This year it will be observed on Friday, May 10, 2024.

On Military Spouse Appreciation Day we honor the contributions and sacrifices made by military spouses. Their commitment and support help to keep our country safe. America’s military spouses are the backbone of the families who support our troops during mission, deployment, reintegration, and reset. Military spouses are silent heroes who are essential to the nation’s strength, and they serve our country just like their loved ones.

Moreover, they play a vital role in national security by undertaking humanitarian and nation-building efforts both domestically and internationally.

Air Force Reserve Birthday is observed on April 14 every year. After the ‘U.S. Air Force’ was established as a separate branch of service, the ‘Air Force Reserve’ was born. Its mission is to provide combat-ready forces to ‘Fly, Fight and Win.’ Reservists play a crucial part in the Department of Defense’s strategy for manpower, global reach, and military flexibility. This day celebrates those who have taken the courageous decision to answer the call of duty. They embody the values of integrity, service before self, and excellence that deserves to be celebrated not just just for a day but the whole year-round

The United States take pride in their military and veterans and takes the numerous opportunities provided throughout the year to celebrate, provide recognition, and memorialize our service members and their families for all the sacrifices they make and have made. March 29th is no different. March 29th is marked on military calendars as Vietnam Veterans Day. The United States involvement with the Vietnam War was controversial and due to the struggles with support, veterans felt they did not have the same type of support other veterans received. By recognizing Vietnam Veterans Day, it brings awareness to the struggles the veterans face, including managing mental health and trauma. The day was officially signed into legislation in 2017 and is recognized throughout most of the States.

The National Medal of Honor Day is celebrated on March 25. The day was implemented in 1991 by Congress as a way to foster recognition and appreciation from the public for recipients of the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is the high award for military valor in action. The first time the award was given was in 1861 during the Civil War. The award is presented to those who have gone above and beyond their call of duty, through fearlessness and courage. The recipients of this award have put their lives at a significant risk of sacrifice to help protect and save others. The award has only been presented to about 3,500 members, which is less than 0.01% of the total members who have served the U.S military. In addition, there are only 19 recipients who have received the award twice. Citizens are also recognized on the National Medal of Honor Day with the Citizen Honors Award. Citizens awarded the medal have shown bravery or continued acts of service of courage and self-sacrifice. Other citizen awards given on this day include the Single Act of Heroism, Young Hero, Service Act, Community Service, and Youth Service.

During the month of March, women are celebrated to help build empowerment and recognize their growth throughout history. On March 21, the United States celebrates Rosie the Riveter Day, which fits perfectly into the month. On this day, the country recognizes the crucial part American women played during World War II. Due to the able men being drafted to serve their country, women were called forward to help in the workforce. From 1940 to 1945, the total number of women in the workforce jumped 10% and over 19 million women held jobs for the first time in their lives outside of the traditional women’s fields. Rosie the Riveter is recognized from the iconic poster – a woman in a red and white bandana raising her right fist as a way to recruit women. Rosie the Riveter became such a cultural icon during this time and was even glorified in Hollywood with a movie. In 2017, Congress locked in the Rosie’s significant impact in culture by creating the celebration of Rosie the Riveter on March 21.
