Oh my my my! The Boston area has some very lovely people and some really wonderful urban farming programs for communities. Farmer Amanda had the opportunity to tour with Michael. The secret alley entrance is so misleading because the farm boasts bountiful gardens and a geothermal multi-purpose greenhouse. The 150 person CSA supports 40 local farms and they employ youth, work at school gardens and donate a ton of produce at weekly giveaways. Feeling inspired!

More wasps!

Hi. It's us again. Your weird friends who always want to show you creepy nature things. Let's talk about the fraternal potter wasp.

This artistic wasp makes little pots. But why? When a female fraternal potter wasp is creating her future generation, she creates a tiny mud jar with bits of water and soil. This process usually takes her a couple of hours, after which, she sticks her abdomen inside the mini pot and lays a single egg. Now comes the fun part.

The female wasp seeks out moth and butterfly larvae. Once she acquires her target, she stings the caterpillar in the head, paralyzing it. She then takes her comatose caterpillar victim back to the mud pot, stuffs it inside, and seals it shut. Once the baby wasp larvae hatches, it will then feed on the still alive caterpillar for many meals to come. What a great mom.

Here's a common pest of our summer garden. They love to taste your tomatoes which makes the surface discolored and makes them taste weird, too.

If you’re spending time out in the garden this time of year, you’re probably seeing a lot of Eastern Leaf-footed Bugs (Leptoglossus phyllopus). They’re common on a wide range of plants in the South, including thistles, roses, sunflowers, yucca, tomatoes, okra, peaches, and cucumbers. Eastern Leaf-footed Bugs are named after the “leaf” on their back legs. These structures are thought to help males fight each other over access to females.

Alabama is blessed with abundant water resources. Learn simple changes you can make to keep our water clean. We need it!

This compost site is one of four like it in Massachusetts, where Black Earth turns food scraps and leaves into “black gold” for the garden. Farmer Amanda got a personal tour from veteran Composter and Regional Site Operations Manager, Syed D**g.
Several tons of food scraps are picked up curbside every day. Leaves, horse bedding and hardwood grinding are stockpiled on site. And residents can drop off yard trimmings.
The material is turned first into aerated piles then into larger windrows, then finally screened into a fine dark crumbly soil magic.
The Black Earth compost is sold by the bag, truckload and also blended as a raised bed mix.
