Guatemala Hope for the Animals
The Lake Atitlan area of the Highlands of Guatemala has been said to be the most beautiful place in the world. The stunning geography includes a volcanic lake surrounded by a dozen traditional Mayan villages, where despite it being a popular tourist area the Maya have preserved their culture through hundreds of years of oppression. Poverty is rampant however, with many living on no more than the equivalent of $1.00 per day and when people themselves have scarce resources, there is often little or nothing left over for companion animals such as dogs and cats.
Guatemala Hope for the Animals was created to respond to a crisis for approximately 120 such dogs and cats sheltered in the Highlands area, who need ongoing care support. We are responding to this need with a multi-phase plan. Guatemala Hope has been incorporated as a non-profit in the United States and as of late December 2018 is pending approval of application for 501(c)(3) status. Our plan:
Phase 1: Fundraise to cover immediate costs to continue to feed, house and provide veterinary care for the animals.
Phase 2: Send a team of experienced animal rescuers and a veterinarian from the United States to work with the Guatemalans caring for the animals to:
