August 17th, 1945 is Indonesia's Independence Day. Typically, Indonesians start the day with flag hoisting ceremonies. Then, the whole country celebrates with various fun competitions (lomba) such as panjat pinang (pole climbing), tug of war, sack race, krupuk eating, etc.
