Dr. Rios, one of the keynote speakers from the NICC conference, shared so many profound memories from his own experience, growing up in a very difficult part of Oakland where gangs, drugs, and crime were commonplace.
Despite those difficult beginnings, and his own decision to drop out of school at one point, he expresses a deep belief in the value of early education.
He describes his fascination with the Greek entity Proteus, who could change forms depending on what the environment around him called for. The story is especially poignant, illustrating the necessity of not just code-switching, but being-switching, for kids trying to survive in tough environments.
Speakers like Dr. Rios are what make NICC such a rewarding conference every year, illustrating the very real potential for the success of so many of the programs we sponsor and deliver through the staff at Reach Out and our partners.
