Milgrain is a jewelry technique where tiny beads of precious metal are carefully applied to the piece - in this case, our custom Rhodalite Garnet Earrings.

Derived from the French term “mille-grain,” or, “a thousand grains” - milgrain traces back as far as 700 BCE. Meticulous craftsmanship and expertise are required to execute milgrain in a way that enhances jewelry. When done well, it enhances sparkle and shine: the perfect delicate detail.

In 1982, Bob Johnson (Jeff’s father) dreamt of a Christmas gift for his wife, Lois, which would express both his love for her and the reason for the season. Together with Jeff after approximately nine hundred hours of work, they designed and handcrafted an ornament so precious the Guinness Book of World Records named it the World’s Most Valuable Christmas Ornament.

Within the ornament of spun 14k gold wire, a reverent scene unfolds: Mary prays over her new baby, Jesus lies in his cradle, Joseph leans on his staff and a young shepherd boy holds one lamb and stands beside another. The craftsmen hand-carved each small figure from wax and then cast them individually in 14k yellow gold. They tended to even the minutest detail from the figures’ facial features, the drape of their clothing to the texture of their hair. The result is a still, but lifelike rendition of the night Christ was born.

Beside the manger, an opened chest reveals a 1.14-carat flawless round diamond, a token from wise men that found their way to the scene by the Star of Bethlehem. The star itself radiates above as an originally 5.05-carat round brilliant diamond. It is surrounded by 13 smaller round brilliants diamonds and 14k white gold rays, which extend to the scene below.

The ornament is approximately four inches wide and seven and a half inches tall on display. Now a part of the family’s personal jewelry collection, it is a precious depiction of the season’s priceless message. It will never be sold.

The Christmas Tree 🎄

Each year, Jeff’s grandmother arranged a Christmas tree atop her home’s piano in Upper Arlington. Inspired by those trees of old, Bob and Jeff set out to create a tree unlike any other. This heavily detailed Christmas tree required 1,100 hours of design and creation.

Constructed similar to an artificial tree, the 14k yellow and green gold Christmas tree was cast limb by limb and then attached individually to the trunk. The makers even bent and crossed each pine needle and limb to emulate the way they appear in nature.

Once the pine tree was constructed, Bob and Jeff decorated it in spectacular fashion. A garland of 516 seed pearls wraps around the tree, with a variety of 14k yellow gold ornaments set with diamonds, pearls, rubies, and emeralds. Hidden treasures are discovered in each limb such as 14k gold candy canes and small 14k white and yellow gold candles sit atop the branches. Finally, a magnificent 14k white gold star set with a 5-carat round brilliant center diamond and 5 small round brilliant diamonds top this stunning piece of art.

Of course, no tree is complete without presents. Draped around the tree is a high polish 14k yellow gold tree skirt. On top lies a sled and with twisted 14k wire rope and 14k yellow gold gift box wrapped with a 14k white gold ribbon and bow yet to be open. An even taller gift box sits unwrapped and displays within it a diamond solitaire engagement ring.

The Christmas Tree was complete in 1984 and put on display with the Nativity Ornament at the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio.

It’s officially that time. ✨

For those that are new here, every year we share three Christmas Ornaments handcrafted by Jeff and his father, Robert Johnson: The Wreath, The Christmas Tree, and The World’s Most Valuable Christmas Ornament.

Pictured first is The Wreath. Modeled after the wreaths hung in the first floor windows of Jeff’s grandmother’s home, this contains 133 individually die-struck 14k green gold holly leaves peppered with 28 round reddish-orange carnelian bead holly berries. However beautiful, the leaves and berries are only a frame.

At the very center of the wreath stands a matte finished candle made of 14k white gold. The candle is lit with a 5.50 carat caramel color African Tourmaline cut specifically for the piece. Altogether, the wreath took approximately 1,000 hours to create.
