Dr. Lillie D. Williamson previously served as the Communications Liaison (2014-2018) and President (2017-2019) of the Black Graduate Student Association at UIUC. She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Communication in December 2019. Currently, Lillie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin.
Her advice to graduate students largely revolves around two points: “First, graduate school will take up much of your life, but it is not all that you are. Graduate school will be over at some point (even if it might not feel like it!). You want to ensure that you have not lost yourself in the process. Find your support network and make sure that it includes people who pour into you as a person, not just a graduate student, and who will remind you to make time for yourself.
Second, remember that your journey through graduate school is just that - your own. Try not to compare or be sidetracked by what others are doing, or claim to be doing. Their path may not look anything like your path. Find mentors who will help you figure out what you need to do to make progress and set yourself up for whatever you want your next step to be.”
Tonight she, amongst many other esteemed scholars, will be speaking on a panel about Medical Mistrust and Racial Inequalities in the Distribution and Uptake of COVID-19 Vaccinations!
Please show our 2017-2019 BGSA President Dr. Williamson some love!
