In honor of Steinway & Sons' 170th anniversary this month, here's a look at the very first grand piano produced by founder Henry E. Steinway. Known as the "kitchen piano" because he built it secretly in the kitchen of his home, the instrument incorporated many pioneering developments for building grand pianos.

Tomorrow is the last day to register for the Des Moines Area Piano Festival and Victor Borge Legacy Award Competition! This year, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Marion Scott as an adjudicator and presenter! All participants will have a special opportunity to hear a master class from Dr. Marion Scott, Music Director at Saint Augustin Parish from 3:30 to 4:00 pm at the Salisbury House and Gardens. Dr. Scott started his career in piano at the age of 14 and has presented national and international concerts, participated in music festivals, and won numerous competitions, including the Thousand Islands International Piano Competition and the International Piano Competition hosted by the Steinway Society of MA. Don't forget to register for the Des Moines Area Piano Festival and Victor Borge Legacy Award Competition! Applications are due this Friday, February 17. Learn more about adjudicator, Dr. Rene Lecuona in link below from the University of Iowa School of Music, whom will present a seminar on the mastery of rhythm from 4:00 to 4:30 pm, free to all attendees.
The countdown begins: 5 days to register and 2 weeks until the Des Moines Area Piano Festival and Victor Borge Legacy Award Competition! All participants will have the special opportunity to attend seminars from Dr. Marion Scott from Saint Augustin Parish and Dr. Rene Lecuona from the University of Iowa School of Music. Dr. Lecuona (featured below) will adjudicate the Victor Borge Legacy Award Competition and will also present a seminar on "An Exploration of the Mastery of Rhythm" from 4:00 to 4:30 pm. K-12 students in all levels are welcome to participate in the Piano Festival, while the Victor Borge Competition is an opportunity for advanced students to compete for scholarships and the honor to play a recital at the Museum of Danish America.
