Fire restrictions in effect for Eldorado NF and the Rubicon Trail!

Talked to the Forest Service and the contractor for the Fordyce dam project today.

Campfires ok, with a permit. Get one here and have it with you: https://www.readyforwildfire.org/permits/campfire-permit/

Flow rates: expect continuous high rates until they achieve minimum pool at the lake (projected July 23-24 timeframe). No changes planned until then. Keep this in mind when planning trips.

Rattlesnake Road: closed for the season (Oct 15 was quoted as the end of season). There have been numerous OHV users on the road in spite of signage /flaggers and this past weekend turned into a sh*tshow. They have engaged law enforcement now so expect tickets now. Having folks yell at their workers/flip them off has resulted in the expected response. They are working 6-7 days a week so don’t bother debating it. The road is closed.

Careful driving! Road work all summer long!

Traffic Delays on Ice House Road!
There are multiple flaggers on Ice House Rd between Peavine Ridge and the turnoff to Loon Lake. The road in this stretch is being overlaid this summer, right now they are cleaning and lining roadside ditches and daylighting drainage structures. Expect delays up to an hour the rest of the season, Monday thru Friday, 7AM to 4PM. We are all just gonna have to plan ahead and be patient!

The California Senate Transportation Committee is currently reviewing a bill, SB 961, proposed by Senator Scott Wiener, that would require implementation of a "passive intelligent speed assistance system" on 50% of new vehicles in California by 2029, and 100% of vehicles in California by 2032. Cal4Wheel submitted a letter to oppose the bill, given that the immediate and long-term impact on Cal4Wheel members would be significant. I’ve been in contact with PGE and FS this week. No word yet on whether Rattlesnake Rd will be open at all prior to work starting again at Fordyce Lake. Stay tuned but advise not to make plans to access Committee crossing to Rattlesnake Rd until there is further word.

Did you know that Sierra Trek is staffed by 100% volunteers? For over 50 years, clubs and individuals have worked year-round to bring you this incredible event. This year around 300 of us will be guiding you on trails, serving your food, and putting together a raffle containing around $40,000 of goodies.

If you would like to volunteer, there are still opportunities available. Our next meeting is this Wednesday, May 8th, at 7 PM. You may attend in person at the cal4wheel office or by Zoom.

Seasonal Road and Trail Closure Extended through April 15

Based on recent and predicted rain and snow, the seasonal closure of dirt roads and motorized trails is being extended through April 15 on the Eldorado National Forest.

Using motor vehicles on dirt roads and trails when soil moisture is high can cause damage to roadbeds from rutting, and impaired water quality from excess erosion.

A minimum three month closure period from January 1 through March 31 was designated for the core part of the wet season in the Eldorado National Forest Travel Management Plan. This plan also allows the seasonal closure to start earlier or be extended based on actual conditions in a given year.

The roads and trails that are subject to the seasonal closure are marked with a "Seasonal Designation" on the current Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) for the forest. The MVUMs are available from any forest office or can be downloaded from the forest website at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/eldorado/maps-pubs/?cid=fseprd637014.

The seasonal closure does not affect roads and trails in the Rock Creek Area near Georgetown which has its own wet weather closure process.

For additional recreation information, contact the Visitor Services staff from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday:

• Forest Supervisor’s Office - 530-622-5061
• Georgetown Ranger District – 530-333-4312
• Placerville/Pacific Ranger District - 530-644-2324
• Amador Ranger District – 209-259-3774
