Writing Center Tutors and Marshmallow Challenge!
We here at the Writing Center are so proud of two of our tutors Dominique Bautista and Dion Skinner and the LAVC Speech and Debate Team who completed against 31 schools at the California Community College Forensics Association (CCCFA) Speech and Debate Championships on March 9-13, 2016 at City College of San Francisco in Concord, California.
The team of 15 members returned home with 6 Gold, 10 Silver, and 6 Bronze Medals from the statewide competition for California community college students. The team is coached by Kevin Briancesco, Allison Bowman, and Jimmy Gomez.
Overall, the team was honored as the 4th best overall program in the entire state of California. It should be noted that the success of Valley’s students is especially impressive when considering the disparity of budgetary and coaching resources between Valley and its top competition at other colleges.
On March 17, 2016, The Writing Center at LAVC hosted the kick-off event for La Academia, a new program designed to provide assistance to Spanish speaking students. With over 100 people in attendence, the event was a huge success.
On behalf of the students, faculty, and administrators, we want to thank all of you who participated and were involved in the event. We want to send a special shout-out to the following staff who truly went above and beyond in their efforts that included months of planning, developing fliers and logos, and lending their creativity and experitise to this endeavor: Aaron Nolasco, Luis Nunez, Magaly Jimenezm Evelyn Puebla, Jose Lazo, Dani Gilia, and Josh Munson.
A special thank you to Holly and Fay for their coordination, and last but certainly not least, Jose Cancino, whose leadership, vision, and passion made this event happen.
