Instead of giving Jake and Emma an allowance, I decided to try something different: create a program that incentivized playing sports, competition & financial decision making 👌
Done and done! Our 2023 Hood to Coast relay was complete around 11:45am on Saturday 8/26. What started out as "you can't participate in the relay due to two broken toes" turned out to be "we not only completed the race but did so nearly 1.5 hours earlier than anticipated!"
Amy ROCKED her last leg and was the first in our van to be completely done with all 3 legs. We were envious of her to say the least and the fact that she was so upbeat after sleeping less than 2 hours in the previous day was impressive!
Please excuse the "Blair Witch Project" style video 🤣 It was 1:15am out in Mist, Oregon and there were people sleeping in the field right in front of me which is why I kept my voice down. Our van just completed our 2nd legs so we were exhausted and we still had to drive an additional hour to get to a point where we could try and sleep for a couple hours before running our last legs.
Leg 1 of Hood to Coast complete! Figured out, through trial and error, a walk/jump/skip/hop combination that allowed me to move at a quick pace albeit slower than my typical run. Avoided breaking the toes further so that's a win 😜
What happens when you break your toes but you're supposed to run the Hood to Coast relay this Friday? You still do it! 🤣
Without prompting her, Emma decided to come up with her own version of a savings strategy. (Must run in the family 😜). Wait until the end to hear what she plans to do with her money when she gets older ❤️
A week ago Jake landed his biggest ski jump yet! Not too shabby for a 9 year old especially considering his dad won't even do it 😎
Jake & Emma have both wanted to do a lemonade stand for quite some time. With the weather being as hot as it's been this week they decided to create a stand, make the lemonade and get their business going. For 2 hours they sat out in the heat yelling at cars, walkers and cyclists as they rode by asking if they wanted something to drink. Jake handled the money side of the business while Emma ensured orders were fulfilled. Amy and I sat back and watched everything unfold. The first sale came within 15 minutes and the excitement level shot through the roof. They were hooked. Their sales skills accelerated quickly after that and within 2 hours they sold $40 of lemonade. Super proud to watch them start their first business all on their own and have them experience a huge sense of accomplishment. Not bad for a couple of 7 and 9 year olds!
Jake's former baseball coach asked him to sub in a AAA game this past weekend which meant he would face off against an actual pitcher for the first time. We were excited, and nervous, to see how he would do. Faced with a full count he fouled off two balls before, well, you just have to see it. We were lucky enough to get his first AAA at bat on video as well as capture the audio of his dad freaking out 😂 😎
