My estate planning practice is growing, and some things I have worked on and have witnessed over the past few months make me very happy that I have chosen to engage in this area of law.

1. I have seen (and have worked on) a number of cases where a person passed away unexpectedly, and they did not have a will or trust in place. It is fairly awful seeing family members scramble to take care of business, having to deal with toxic family members, or losing assets.

2. I have seen how helpful durable powers of attorney are in practice, especially if one is single and relies on non-kin for help, or is in a committed relationship without marriage. It is awful seeing long-term partners be denied decision-making power for their person, and instead it turns out to be that toxic sibling who gets a say-so in medical care and financial decisions.
