Distracted Driving Means Dangerous Driving
We have all experienced that terrifying -"oh-no-they're-going-to-hit-me" - moment, when we see another driver swerving dangerously in front of or alongside our own vehicle. Often times when we look over at the other driver and see them chatting away, we think to ourselves "oh, of course, they're on the phone!" We are a world of multitaskers and while m
Have plenty of drive practice to the point you can perform the basic drive skills confidently and easily as it would be second nature to you.
Drivers under the age of 18 may not use any mobile communications device at all, whether hands-free or hand-held.
If you need to make a call or send a text, pull over and park at a safe location.
As we get closer to the end of the , we want to remind you to drive sober and drive focused throughout the year!
We appreciate all of our partners that work tirelessly to engage the public about the dangers of driving impaired, including The National Road Safety Foundation and We Save Lives who helped lead the 100 Safest Days.
According to NHTSA, "impaired" driving is defined by a person with a BAC of .08 or greater. Studies indicate that a person can be impaired by alcohol at .01 % BAC.
Before driving into an unfamiliar city, plan your route with a navigation device.
Know the names of streets before your turns, then you won't be signaling and slowing at the last minute.
Also only look down at your directions if you are pulled to the curb or stopped at a stop sign or light.
Before the car starts, buckle up!
Come to a complete stop. Check carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding.
As schools across the state begin to open, the safety of our children is our top priority. When driving in or near school zones, please stay alert, follow speed limits, and avoid distractions like using your cell phone. Together, we can help ensure our children get to and from school safely.
August is National Back to School Month, and the California Highway Patrol is committed to protecting our communities.
Seat belts save lives.
Today, tomorrow, and every day, please buckle up.
School's open - Focus on the road
Nearly 1/3 of child pedestrian fatalities occur after school between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., which is why it's important to help keep your family and others safe on the road and around school zones where there are increased pedestrians and vehicle traffic.
Dialing a cell phone is 3 times more likely to cause a collision.
Good Driving Techniques Will Not Only Make You Safer On
The Road, It Will Make Your Car Last Longer Also.
Remember, even if you follow the rules of the road others may not be. Therefore, watch for those drivers who do not follow the laws and regulations for safety behind the wheel.
Keep your hands low on the steering wheel
(at 8 and 4 or at 9 and 3).
This will keep your hands away from the airbag, so they won't break your nose in a collision.

The 2 most important driving safety tips that will prevent collisions are diligent observation and keeping space around your vehicle
This summer SLOW DOWN! Speed is a top contributor to injury and fatality crashes on our roads.
Watch You Speed
Remember there are two things you have less of on winding roads, visibility and control. This is why taking a bend in the road at a slower speed than a straight road is necessary.
You can help prevent road rage by giving yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.
Knowing you may be running late automatically puts you into "speed mode" where you are more tempted to get around other drivers to get where you are going.
Remember SMOG:
Signal
Mirror (side mirror)
Over your shoulder
Go
This is the order of things you should do when lane changing.
Some people say "MSMOG" for rear view mirror check first.
A study by Liberty Mutual and SADD found that parents are setting a poor example for teens by engaging in unsafe driving behaviors, such as texting and driving, and are not listening to their kids’ warnings. Forty-one percent of teens say their parents continue these unsafe behaviors even after their teens ask them to stop, and 28% of teens say their parents justify unsafe behavior.
When driving on roads with multiple traffic lanes, ensure you are not moving in any vehicle blind spot.
This is just near the back end of any vehicle.
Keep at least a car length distance between you and the car next to you.
They could make a lane change without seeing you.
If you are taking a driver training course with a professional driver instructor, your instructor will know what the examiners will be looking for and should let you know that information.
Have plenty of drive practice to the point where you can perform the basic drive skills confidently and easily, as it would be second nature to you.
You should turn on your signal
about 1/4 to 1/2 a block before your turn,
but not before a road or driveway you
will pass before your turn.
If another driver turning from that
road or driveway sees your signal,
they might turn in front you, thinking you will turn there.
Notice what's happening around you.
Those who use the safest driving techniques will be concentrating on what is happening around them using effective driving observation.
· Follow the speed limit.
· Slow down at intersections.
· Give pedestrians a brake at crosswalks and unmarked corners.

Life moves fast. Your car shouldn’t. Keep neighborhoods safe. Drive like your friends or family live there. Better slow than sorry.
Know the speed limit and follow the speed limit. It’s a limit. The speed limit is not a suggestion, or “Drive 15 miles an hour faster than what the sign says.”
Unrestrained passenger vehicle occupant fatalities in all seating positions increased 12.4% from 782 in 2020 to 878 in 2021.
Bicyclists
Use hand signals.
Always use lights at night – at least front white light and rear red reflector – and wear a helmet.
Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle.
Use the bike lane, if available, unless making a left turn, passing, or approaching a place where a right turn is allowed.
Stop for pedestrians. Bicyclists must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians within marked crosswalks or within unmarked crosswalks at intersections.
