Daughters of the American Revolution members from Vernon, Tolland and elsewhere gathered Wednesday morning along Route 30 just east of Grove Street to mark the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s visit to Vernon on Sept. 24, 1824.

The French aristocrat and military officer volunteered his services to the General George Washington, his Continental Army and Washington’s staff during the Revolutionary War.

Lafayette made a tour of the United States in 1824-25, which included multiple stops in Connecticut. Lafayette’s day on Sept. 24, 1824 began in Tolland at Elijah Smith’s Tavern. He then traveled to King’s Stage House near the Tolland-Vernon line. Lafayette was traveling to Hartford.

During the Revolution, Lafayette served as a major general in the Continental Army and played a central role in securing French support for the American cause, and blocked British troops at the Battle of Yorktown to help secure victory for the Washington’s army and troops led by French General Rochambeau. Lafayette is considered a key figure in the war due to his military leadership and his ability to foster French involvement in the conflict.

Kathleen Osthus, regent of the Captain Noah Grant Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, placed a wreath at a marker commemorating Lafayette’s tour of Connecticut and honoring the men and women “who have served our republic with integrity and devotion.”

The Vernon Historical Society is hosting a program about Lafayette this Sunday at 2 p.m. at the society building, 734 Hartford Turnpike. Professor Vincent Pitts will discus Lafayette and his role in the revolution. The program is free, although donations are welcome.
