Don't hesitate to look for toys that do not light up or produce sounds. Parents can model the vocabulary and sounds during a specific activity (e.g., producing animal sounds, sounds while pouring from a pitcher, the list is endless!). Noise making toys tend to talk over children. Having a parent produce the sounds instead of the toy allows for the child to have a turn in attempting to communicate or imitate sounds!
October is AAC Awareness Month! 🗣📱🧩
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) refers all of the ways someone can communicate if they are unable to rely on their speech. Some children with Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Childhood Apraxia of Speech, or other communication disorders can be non-verbal or extremely difficult to understand. Various systems and devices can be used in place of speech to help these individuals effectively communicate their wants and needs.
Autism and ADHD can be difficult to distinguish- mostly because they often co-exist and have many overlapping components- but also because many people STILL think autism means anti-social (it doesn’t!).
I teamed up with to bring you the differences between the two conditions. Remember- if there is any question, a full evaluation should be completed to make a differential diagnosis and second opinions are always a good idea if you are unsure or uncomfortable with initial results!
