Today marks an end of an era with TCC EMS as Tom Calogrides, the Dean of Health Professions, leave TCC for greener pastures. Tom began working with TCC EMS in 1992 as a lab proctor, moved to adjunct faculty in 1994, became a full-time professor in 1998, and moved into the Dean's position in 2009. Tom has been a very active, and sometimes obnoxious😄, part of the EMS system including work with several volunteer rescue squads, the VA-1 DMAT team, and Operation Smile to name a few.

Fair winds and following seas, Boss! We will miss you.

BIG BIG NEWS!!!

TCC EMS and Nursing are EXTREMELY happy to announce that we have received the necessary approvals to (FINALLY!) offer a Paramedic-to-RN program!!!

MANY of you have been asking for this for a LONG time and we cannot be happier to be able to make this announcement.

Here is the down and dirty information:
-Applications open January 15 - February 15 (there is an addendum to the traditional nursing applications for Paramedic and RRT applicants)

-Pre-reqs are: BIO 141, ENG 111, PSY 230, SDV 101 and MTH 154 (placement into MTH 154 with the college placement system will work for this application cycle) and 1 year of experience as a Paramedic or RRT.

-Take the HESI before submitting your application

-Selected candidates will begin a transition course over the summer semester and will enter the existing nursing cohort in the fall.

A few specific FAQs:
-Will the schedule work for a current firefighter or paramedic? Not without leave use, no. The nursing program is considered a full-time program and does not have 'flip/flop' scheduling like the paramedic program does.

-What is the job market like? Most nursing graduates receive conditional employment offers before they even graduate. The average nursing salary in the area is $62,478.

-What is the typical school schedule like? You can expect lecture two days a week and clinical 1-2 days a week.

We hope you are as excited as we are about this opportunity!! Have a GREAT weekend!

In healthcare, we are all one, big family. TCC EMS is honored to do our part in helping our brothers and sisters by loaning our ventilators to local ICUs so that they may continue to provide top notch care to all who need it. We also have provided airway training equipment to several local ERs so that they can practice airway control methods using the various PPE available. We love our healthcare family!

Your instructors will be sending the plan out to you, but I have included it here for your reference as well. TCC EMS Department Plan COVID-19 Students.pdf

03/12/2020

URGENT MESSAGE FROM THE TCC EMS PROGRAM DIRECTOR:

TCC EMS Students:

By now you have most likely heard that TCC is adjusting instruction in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. I write to provide some clarification and direction:

1) The initial TCC Alert that went out stating TCC is closed to all students and staff effective immediately WAS IN ERROR. Please disregard that. TCC is operating BUSINESS AS USUAL thru SUNDAY. TCC WILL BE CLOSED TO STUDENTS MONDAY AND TUESDAY next week. Beginning Wednesday, TCC will resume education in a remote delivery format. Remote delivery will continue until at least April 1.

2) At this immediate moment, TCC EMS is not prepared to release details regarding what remote delivery will look like. While I am sure many of you are anxious to get information and details, PLEASE refrain from contacting your instructors. We are developing a plan for all programs with the focus being your safety and the on-time graduation of all students. We simply cannot effectively plan when we are answering continuous questions from students. A PLAN WILL BE DELIVERED BY NOON MONDAY. Until that time, I have instructed all faculty to not discuss any possible plans with students to ensure incorrect information is not released. Please allow us the time necessary to ensure we roll this out correctly and fully.

3) Clinical and field: similar to our operations during inclimate weather we are NOT cancelling clinical and field shifts. That said, if you do not feel comfortable attending a scheduled shift, please send an email to your primary clinical coordinator ([email protected] for ALS students, [email protected] for BLS students). You will not be penalized for choosing not to attend a shift during this time. Please also understand, however, that the Office of EMS has been very clear that they will not be offering variances to standards meaning minimum requirements will not be lessened and we will place students in available clinical shifts at the end of this on an as-needed basis. Basically- please don't view this as an easy way to not attend shifts- you will still have to attend them now or later and the number and location of available shifts will be somewhat limited when everything returns to normal.

Again, please be patient with us over the next few days and give the faculty the space and time needed to ensure we don't miss anything. A full plan for EMS will be published no later than noon Monday.

Thank you all for your patience and cooperation.

TCC's Health Professions Division had the honor of hosting Governor Northam today. During his visit, TCC EMS was able to demonstrate the realism we strive to create to better prepare tomorrow's EMT and Paramedics. When asked if he wanted to "glove up" and help, he said if he wasn't in a suit, he would! Next time, Governor!

Already an EMT and want to take the big step to Paramedic? We have a class starting in June and another in August. Want to become an EMT? We have several options available during the summer semester. Contact us today to find out more! (757) 822-7335.

(While some of these images may appear graphic, please note that these are all during a planned simulation and none of the injuries or blood is real)

Cut suit training #3: Chest tubes! While not yet in common EMS practice, the skill is important in trauma care guidelines.

11/23/2019

Cut suit action video 2:
We can start IVs on the patient, forcing a more realistic scenario rather than having to move to an IV arm task trainer for the actual IV start.

11/23/2019

Here is our new cut suit! 2 arterial bleeding wounds...with blood...that required the application of a tourniquet and wound packing!

11/23/2019

So here we go! TCC EMS is the proud new owner of 2 TCCC/EMS cut suits from Strategic Operations. Our staff spent the past 3 days learning how to set up and use the suit to drastically improve our trauma simulation capabilities.

This suit allows us to simulate a variety of traumatic injuries while using a patient actor...but most importantly allows students to actually treat the injuries as they would in the field...without verbalizing or moving to a task trainer. Training doesn't get more realistic!

Keep an eye on some videos coming on the suit in action during our training!
