The One Indicator...Part 2
2 years ago, I wrote part 1; one sure sign you can tell if you're headed for health issues and how America has higher obesity & shorter life spans than all free countries in the world. If you search the gym's Facebook or Instagram page, you'll find the article around December of 2022 or message me & I'll send it to you, it's worth the read. Today, allow me to add factors to consider when assessing your health.
In addition to the waistline as an indicator of health, please also consider Body Roundness Indicator (BRI) vs. “BMI”. BMI only accounts for weight divided by height. This doesn't consider muscle mass or visceral fat throughout the body. BRI gives bodyfat %, Visceral Adipose tissue (VAT), Total VAT mass, BRI index and BMI on a BRI calculator (webFCE). Now lest you think working out alone without eating correctly will save you, think again. I dare you to pull out your device of choice and check yours now.
Last I want to give 2 trends going on in the 18-35 or so generation. For females, I'd like to address the “thicc” movement that is often followed by the words “Body Positive”. Ladies, I'm not a hater but this is Russian Roulette and you will develop a health issue from this including but not limited to Diabetes Type II, hormonal, cardiovascular and/or cardiac issues. Your waistline should be between 27-30”.
The alarming trend for males in the 18 (if not younger) – 35 crowd is the use of performance enhancing drugs. Most obviously is sudden deaths in those taking drugs without a prescription/ doctor's supervision. Let's start with facts: If you abuse performance enhancing drugs, your life expectancy drops to 53 years on average (65% don't make 40) and sudden death factors are 3 times higher (theturekclinic.com). Now couple that with a waistline >37-40” and we're back to playing Russian Roulette for at least health issues if not the grand prize of sudden death. If you don't believe me subscribe to a national/international bodybuilding/weightlifting news organization and see how many “athletes” die weekly, I guarantee you it will shock you!

What were you doing 15 years ago? Me and a friend were thinking about the possibility of opening a gym. There were no "Mom & Pop" gyms as the two we came from closed. Nothing but corporate gyms in Waco at the time. Frankly, we both were surprised at how poor the customer service was in the corporate gyms, we were sure we could do better. So we pieced together weights & equipment from Craigslist, eBay, local gym sales and opened the Lil Diesel Gym on Waco's South Side in a 12x27 storage unit.
In 2014, we had to move into a bigger space so we moved across the alley into an 1800 SF unit. In 2018, I bought my friend's half of the gym and became the sole owner of Lil Diesel Gym.
In 2020, wishing to improve my property and give members a more convenient location, I moved the gym to its current location of 2000 Loop 340, Unit #104.
I'm proud of this little gym. I know everyone's name unless they choose not to have a relationship with me. I know what they're goals are and I ask about progress. My members know that I give away workout information and challenge them with new exercises or perfecting technique. I run contests that challenge and reward you to reach your peak. I get upset if you pay for a membership and don't use it. Our gym isn't just a gym, it is family for most our members! Don't believe me? Ask my members.
