The last two weeks have been a rollercoaster! Week one in San Antonio for Federal Sentencing CLE. Week two CPS jury trial in Hill County.

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”—Benjamin Franklin. That is the practice of law, learning and being involved.

Dismissed…Deferred Probation! Getting the D is always the goal! Now would I call it luck for a client to get a dismissal because the statute of limitations ran…No, I would call it justice. Two different counties, two different cases, same D “dismissed”.

Yesterday, Attorney Petty was able to obtain deferred prosecution (no final conviction) for two separate theft cases. One of the case was plead down to a class c.

Today, Attorney Petty was able to advocate for her client to receive deferred probation (no felony conviction) instead of 10 years TDCJ probated for 7 years (felony conviction)!

Today has been a hard Monday! One call about a new arrest. One sit down about trial or no trial and possible outcomes including mandatory life sentence. One hearing transferring from juvenile to adult probation and possible registration. But a little glimpse of hope appears. After months of requesting an offer, evidence and a dismissal and getting the response of JAIL, WE WILL REQUEST IT and NO. I set the case for pre-trial, and started getting ready to go to trial, what happened.... DISMISSAL. Some days are harder than others. Some seconds are harder than the next but hope and grace shines through.

I cannot thank you enough Emily for all you have done over the last 10 months!!! You have set the bar high for the next intern. You never once complained about anything asked of you. You were never fearful of being in court, jail (lol) or asking questions. I will miss venting to you and speaking with you. I wish you all the success as you transition into your next chapter of life! Enjoy college and keep God first! Cheers 🥂 to you “Future Attorney “! Thank you to Chilton ISD/ High School for allowing me the opportunity to be apart of the Law and Public Service Career Cluster and having Emily as an intern.

Congratulations Justice Harris-Bolden!!

There’s a new face of justice in Michigan!

Kyra Harris Bolden made history when she was sworn in as an associate justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, becoming the youngest and first Black woman to sit on the state’s high court at 34 years old.

Bolden is no stranger to accruing accolades, as she had “the highest number of bills passed by any freshman representative in 2019.” She once again made history just four years later when Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed her to the Michigan Supreme Court, eighty-four years after Bolden’s great-grandfather was lynched.

“My family has gone from lynching to law school and from injustice to Capital J, Justice,” Bolden told ESSENCE.

In an era where states like South Carolina are moving backward and losing Black court members, Bolden has decided to run for re-election to keep her seat on the Michigan Supreme Court.

Is a federal holiday in the United States (as of June 17, 2021) commemorating emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Juneteenth’s commemoration is on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas. This was almost 3 years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation of 1862 had officially outlawed slavery. 🖤❤️💛💚

Whew what a week this has been. Clients accepted into probation instead of prison time. Two cases in two different counties dismissed, one misdemeanor and one felony 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽.

Ended the week at the Federal Public Defender’s Office for our annual Federal CLE and received an encouraging email from a former client.

Happy Good Friday!! Some clients just need you to listen to them, encourage them and remind them that everything is going to work out! My clients felony case was rejected by the DA’s Office and had been for a few months before we found out(no one gave us notice 😐😐🙃🙃🙃). We did weekly check ins just so the client could have updates. We talked about what happened in her life now and in the past. That was it! I listened, talked, and encouraged her. I didn’t argue or negotiate with the DA, we didn’t go to trial. But to her just being there was enough! I am grateful God blessed me with such an amazing client and allowed me to be a light in such a dark time for her.

January and February have been busy months for the Law Office of DeAndrea Petty. Attorney Petty has been in trial, multiple hearings and meetings as well as going through discovery and speaking with clients.

The January CPS trial ended in what the jury felt was the best interest of the child. However, it was a heartbreaking outcome for the parents.

This week, a week and a day before pre-trial, the same pre-trial in which the Judge stated the client had to plea or be ready to be set for trial. Attorney Petty and Inv. Sawyer meet with the ADAs on the case. At the end of the meeting the client's case was dismissed! Sometimes great things happen at the ninth hour.

May you all have a great day!!! Hopefully the spirit of Love will be flowing through the courthouse today and no one goes to jail 🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾

Happy Black History Month! This is a time to celebrate and remember those who have paved the way for so many others! As an African American Attorney I think of Macon Bolling Allen became the first African American licensed to practice law in the United States in 1844. Charlotte E. Ray
Ray was the first black American female lawyer in the United States. Ray graduated from Howard University School of Law in 1872. SCOTUS Justice Thurgood Marshall who on August 30, 1967, the Senate confirmed Thurgood Marshall as the first Black person to serve as a Supreme Court Justice. In Texas William A. Price (1873) and Allen W. Wilder (1873) were the First African American male lawyers in Texas. Charlye O. Farriswas the first African American female admitted to practice law in Texas the same year. Thereafter, she became the first female lawyer in her hometown of Wichita Falls. She also became the first African American female to serve as the Special Wichita County Judge in 1954. In 1973, she served in a judicial capacity yet again as the acting District Judge of the 78th District Court in Wichita County. Harriet Mitchell Murphy (June 6, 1927 – January 17, 2024) was the first African-American woman appointed to a regular judgeship in Texas. John N. Johnson (1883):First African American male lawyer admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Texas. William A. Price (1873):First African American male judge in Texas. He may also be considered the first Native American male judge in Texas.
Harrel Tillman (1962): First African American male to serve as a municipal court judge in Texas (1964). William A. Price (1873) and Craig Watkins (1994): First African American males elected respectively as a District Attorney in Texas (1876; 2006)
