I will never forget the very moment things changed that day. I can still feel the crisp air of that chilling morning, and everything that followed. May all the families, friends and coworkers effected that day find peace. This day will forever be in our hearts. 🇱🇷NEVER FORGET🇱🇷
WFFD to host 9/11 Anniversary Remembrance Monday at Fire Station #1
The Wake Forest Fire Department is partnering with The Freedom Flag Foundation to host a 9/11 Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony Monday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m. at Fire Station #1, 420 Elm Ave.
Open to the public, the ceremony will include the raising of the Freedom Flag, a display of steel from the World Trade Center, and a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m. – the time the attacks began on September 11, 2001 - to remember those killed on that fateful day.
The Freedom Flag Foundation is a non-profit organization formed to establish the Freedom Flag as a national symbol of remembrance for September 11, 2001, and to support educational efforts of teaching future generations about the tragic events and many lives lost on that date. It all started with a drawing on a napkin by a local Richmond, VA business owner in November 2001 and now is a national movement to educate our kids and to Never Forget. To learn more, visit www.freedomflagfoundation.org/.
For more information about Monday’s 9/11 Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony, contact Administrative Assistance Anne Frounfelker at 919-556-1966.

I would love to see all of our students learning life skills that will help them as they prepare for their journey outside of school. These are valuable lessons. (I would add some finance and bookkeeping skills)
What would you add?
Congratulations to our Wake Forest High School Class of 2023! It was an exciting day watching you come across the stage and prepare for what the world has in store for you.
Enjoy your journey and many wishes and the best of luck in all you do! Go get ‘em.

I had the honor of attending Heritage HS graduation. So exciting to see all these young, excited faces cross the stage, some of which I have watched grown over the years, as they cross the stage from graduate student to young adult, and prepare for their next journey outside of school.
Congratulations to each one of our 2023 seniors. Now it is your turn to shine!
Enjoy your next chapter.

Va**ng is all around our children. V**e shops are close to our schools, some even walking distance. We need to have these talks with our children more, and be aware of signs in and out of the home.
Parents and children can come together to learn about the dangers of va**ng, and harmful ingredients. POE Health has some great videos and resources to help parents get started.
Have the talk!

Thank you to Joshua Sheppard, of Neuse River MS, who was recognized at the Teacher of the Year Banquet. Thank you for all that you do for our children.
This week was the Teacher of the Year Banquet. I wanted to recognize our WFHS teacher, Sarah Freeman, for all of her hard work, and recognized as a runner up for this award. It was inspiring to hear her story, and how she works with our children.
Thank you to all of our amazing teachers that work so hard for our students and families.
“Board Member Cheryl Caulfield said Tuesday night she had asked towns in her eastern Wake County board district to pursue policies that would prevent stores that sell e-cigarettes and va**ng cartridges from being located close to schools. She said mayors have so far supported her request.”
I have been trying to work with our municipalities at the town level, to create a v**e shop ordinance with a safer distance from our schools. Every layer we can add is a step closer to protecting our children.
Thank you to the mayors and town staff of Rolesville and Knightdale for speaking with me, and for swiftly adding ordinances to help with this extra layer.
There are many dangers in teen va**ng and addictions. As a community we need to come together to help keep our children safe from harm. I am glad WCPSS has taken steps that will serve to help protect our children, and keep them safe with the lawsuit against JUUL. As a board we can work on ways to use this settlement to teach students about their health. Once the funds are received the board can get to work on ways to make this happen.
Wake schools announces $6.2M settlement with JUUL over teen va**ng The school system will be able to use the money to combat va**ng. Other NC districts had joined the suit, too.
For all of those that live within the Town of Town of Rolesville, NC, please show Mayor Ronnie Currin your support for re-election as the Mayor. Mayor Currin exemplifies the passion and dedication to Rolesville; a true gentleman, and a leader to learn from. Best of luck! We need leaders like you.
As a Commissioner for 18 years and as Mayor the last four years, it has been an honor to serve the citizens of Rolesville and a leader of the Rolesville Community as a whole. Therefore, I would like to announce that with the full support of my family, I will be seeking another term as Mayor this fall. If reelected, I will continue my focus on:
• Sensible Spending
• Community Driven Business Growth
• Preserving Valued Community Characteristics
• Building Parks, Supporting Recreation, Exploring History and Culture
• Greater Transparency
Engaging with citizens is best part of my job. One of my first actions when elected Mayor more than three years ago was to offer the Town Board meetings by live broadcast. My endeavor has been to represent all of Rolesville if you have lived here for two months, two years or two decades. I have a love for engaging in the community including Civil Organizations, Chamber of Commerce, Churches, Alumni Sororities & Fraternities, Non-profits, and many other groups. Finally, if you would like to further discuss any of my impressions or talk about concerns of yours, please reach out. Rolesville is a great place to live, and raise a family. I would be honored if you cast your vote for me on November 7th. Thank you for your time, & support.
Mayor Ronnie Currin
For the safety of our children we need the access to stop. They legally should not be selling any v**e products to minors, our students, yet they get them easily. I have been working with our mayors and commissioners in District 1 to create an ordinance to at least not have them within a certain distance of our schools. Zebulon has one in place. Town council in Knightdale was very open to it, and I am so grateful that without hesitation Mayor Jessica Day and staff quickly creating an ordinance there in Knightdale. I have had conversations with our other towns in District 1, and hope to have all of our towns on board with creating safe boundaries for our children in regards to accessing v**e products easily.
***UPDATED: Rolesville, Mayor Ronnie Curran and town staff have now also approved an ordinance to keep V**e shop away from our schools. Another step in protecting our children. Thank you.
Va**ng continues to be a constant struggle around our schools. There is a trend of v**e shops opening around our schools, some directly across the street. Our teens can walk across the street to some of them. Delta 8 recently came on my radar. It was explained that this synthetic can be sold in the form of gummies, candies, even chocolates. It can be purchased on line, in stores, and gas stations and may not be age restrictive. Please read article attached for awareness.

What a great ceremony tonight celebrating all our amazing teachers, and hearing their stories. Congratulations to our WCPSS Teacher of the Year, and to all those nominated.
Congratulations to Terry Hennings, a Civic Literacy and African American Studies teacher at Garner Magnet High School, who is the 2023 Wake County Public School System Teacher of the Year!
Hennings chose teaching as a second career after having served in the United States Air Force for 25 years. He has been Garner Magnet High’s Civic Literacy and African American Studies teacher for grades 9-12 since July 2017.
Hennings holds a Master of Arts degree in teaching from N.C. State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Troy University and an associate’s degree in applied science from the Community College of the Air Force.
When sharing about his instructional style, Hennings wrote, “My time in the U.S. Air Force has provided a unique opportunity to insert my own experiences and include personal, culturally relevant experiences. Once students discover the personal connection I have with their culture, race or ethnicity, it increases the opportunity for meaningful bonds to form.”
Hennings added that the pandemic highlighted the importance of social-emotional needs of students.
“My relationship with my students is the foundation upon which everything else rests. From the moment a student enters my classroom, the goal is for them to feel welcome, safe and at ease,” Hennings said. He added that he has initiated protocols to help strengthen students’ confidence and communication skills.
Hennings serves on the WCPSS Superintendent’s Teacher Advisory Council and as Garner High’s Black Student Union Club advisor. He also has served on the school’s Equity Team and as a Civic Literacy Professional Learning Community Leader.
As Teacher of the Year, Hennings will participate in the Go Global NC international study program in South Korea during summer 2024. The trip is sponsored by the Dan Royster Memorial Teacher Award, in honor of a former WCPSS science teacher.
Hennings will also have the use of a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, compliments of Capital Chevrolet, for the next year.
In addition, Hennings received an engraved award, a $50 gift card to Angus Barn, a $1,000 check compliments of sponsors, a weekend stay at the Umstead Hotel and Spa with complimentary breakfast at Heron’s Restaurant, a $100 Amazon gift card compliments of sponsors; a 65-inch flat screen TV, compliments of Homes For Heroes; a $50 Target gift card compliments of Eplee + Associates; a Chromebook compliments of Lenovo a gift bag from Crossroads Chick-fil-A; and an autographed hockey stick and t-shirt donated by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Here are some great shots of all the talented students at the 40th Pieces of Gold.
What a great show by our talented students and teachers of the Eastern part of WCPSS. Well done! 👏. Stars of the East.
I recently had the pleasure of meeting a couple of 2nd grade classes during READ ACROSS AMERICA, at Wilburn ES. We read a "Who Was" book (series) about E.B.White together. He is the author of Charlotte's Webb and Stuart Little. They were quite intrigued, as some had not heard about that book, or thought about the authors behind their books.
I shared with them a story about how when I was growing up we visited a place in Maine for vacation every year, and as it turns out E.B. White stayed in the cabin next to ours. He would rent it out for the entire summer, and there he would write his stories. He fell in love with Maine, and eventually bought a home and retired there. They had a picture page in the book that was a view I could see from my cabin as a young girl. So cool! They loved the story, and learning about E.B. White. Today, I received a heart moving message of the class enjoying the book "Charlotte's Webb," They are on chapter 3 already!
Although, the story inspired them, they really inspired me. These children truly are the blessings that reminds me why I ran, and why I am serving on the board.
I share this story to implore our community to sign up and volunteer to help our children. They love having the visitors, and it helps our teachers out as well. If you are able, please come out to your local school, and help spread that inspiration that keeps them learning. These smiley faces will make your day!
Thank you Milburn ES for sharing your 2nd Graders with me.
So excited to see this show!
Come out and support our local High School talent.

For the past 60 years, North Carolina's governors have reserved their highest honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine award, for persons who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.
That award was presented this evening to Freddie-Lee Heath, Director of Arts Programs, who is retiring next month. Gov. Roy Cooper presented the award to Heath as a surprise at the 40th Annual Pieces of Gold Event at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts (more from those awesome performances later!).
An excerpt from Superintendent Catty Moore's letter nominating Freddie-Lee for the honor: "Anyone who knows Freddie-Lee knows his ardent passion for his work. And for those who benefit so richly from it, he sits head and shoulders above all others.
He ignites the joy of learning among students, he inspires the teachers he leads to be like him, and he sparks energy and enthusiasm wherever he goes throughout our community and this great state.
Having overseen arts programs in our district for the last seven years, Freddie-Lee guides the work of 650 arts educators. Before this, he taught at seven schools over 23 years. He inspired many of his students not only to embrace the arts in its different forms, but also to pursue arts as a career - many of whom chose to become teachers themselves!
Freddie-Lee’s reach spreads far and wide across the great state of North Carolina, and he has represented our state well on the national scene. He is a former president of the North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Over the course of several years, he presented at 10 different state AAHPERD conventions. He has shared his passion and love for dance at more than 35 state conferences and beyond, including the National Museum of Dance and the National Dance Company of Armenia."
Congratulations to a WCPSS legend!
Had the privilege to attend our 40th Pieces of Gold Show tonight. So many talents students in all kinds of performances. The arts and music are so special and so important for so many reasons. I really loved seeing the talent up on that stage. This was not my first time enjoying POG, and it will not be my last. Even more special… seeing a bunch of familiar faces from all over District 1 (and 3 😉) up on stage. Well done! 👏

BEWARE OF THE RED APPLE AT THE POLLS!
⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️
NCAE is handing out red apple flyers at the polls, misleading the public.
*NCAE is NOT a teachers union
*e.83%+ of our teachers do not support NCAE
This is what they don’t want you to know:
*79% of our children are failing Math1, HS math,
(news hit this week, it’s far worse, now decades behind in progress, back to the 90’s)
*50% of our children not proficient in 3rd grade reading - pivotal
*Proficiency (grade level/passing) is now only 60%, not a high standard
*WCPSS boasts 90% graduation rate. They just pass our kids to next level, not prepared with skills they need. This is failing our students!
I AM the candidate listening to the real issues the teachers face, and will advocate for what they really want:
~ Support from admin,
~ Strong policies on discipline,
~ Resources they need,
~ Less admin/more teaching,
~ Let our teachers focus on reading, writing and arithmetic
~ Advocate for more pay, and incentives
My focus is on our students, and our teachers, not agendas.
We received $400MILL in Covid Relief Funds, our emergency is NOW!
WCPSS needs:
~Tutoring
~Teachers aides,
~Fair pay,
~Improved student discipline policies,
~Ample classroom resources.

Another great day at the polls. Long lines of voters wrapped around the corner - many folks are passionate about getting out to vote this year
👏🇺🇸
Do not forget the back of the ballot - Wake County School Board and Soil and Water - Non-partisan and important roles in local elections.
NC students drop to historic lows on national tests…
I really wish WCPSS would get more tutors and Aides in to help our students. Let’s put those Covid Relief Funds to good use. Our children need it! 🙏
