Over the last week, many of us have seen the video of a celebrity inflicting a vicious physical attack on his then girlfriend. This disturbing video has garnered outrage as well as numerous questions including “why did she put up with the abuse for so long, why didn’t she just leave?”

There are many reasons why victims stay with their abusers; these range from fear to the belief that the abuser will change for them to isolation to damaged self-worth to religious beliefs to financial constraints. Fear may be the biggest motivator for a victim to remain with their abuser; more than half the victims murdered by their abusers are murdered AFTER they leave.

We need to take the blame off the victim and instead ask “why doesn’t the abuser just stop abusing?”

Witnessing the violence shown in the video has caused people to wonder what they can do to help stop domestic violence. There are numerous things you can do:

*If you or someone you know has experienced any type of intimate partner violence including physical, emotional, financial, sexual or technological abuse, reach out to CAP’s 24/7 Hotline at 301-645-3336 for information, crisis intervention, advocacy & accompaniment and/or ongoing counseling.

*Know that there are programs out there to help abusers grow and change their behavior. Services available include CAP’s Abuse Intervention Program. Reach out to CAP’s 24/7 Crisis Hotline at 301-645-3336 for more information.

*Schedule a presentation for your workplace, community group or church to learn more about domestic violence. Reach out to CAP at 301-645-3336 for more information.

*Donate funds to support our mission to assist victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and others in crisis. Go to our website https://www.centerforabusedpersonscharlescounty.org/donate to make a donation or mail a check to CAP, 2670 Crain Highway, Suite 303, Waldorf, MD 20601.

*Volunteer to be an outreach volunteer with CAP, going to court or the hospital with victims following their abuse incident. Reach out to CAP’s 24/7 Crisis Hotline at 301-645-3336 for more information.

Horrible things like this are happening all around us. Know the signs of abuse in teens, speak up when you see something, and advocate for those who are unable to advocate for themselves.

It sounds like something out of dystopian fiction—children as young as 7 forced into “camps'' with an abusive parent, held captive until they admit that the abuse they were subjected to never happened. Run by unqualified individuals who see a way to profit off of the family court system, reunification camps hold children until they can convincingly feign affection for the parent that oftentimes controlled them, harmed them, sexually abused them or was abusive to their other parent in front of them.
