Today is Team Poteete Mechanical's 13th anniversary. Our home-based company began with Don and Kelley catching service calls in a pickup truck with a lot of honest hard work and word-of-mouth advertising. Although we are grateful for our residential beginnings, we have grown into a regional leader of light commercial VRV HVAC equipment, which is the way of the future. Many thanks to our great clients and distributors through the years who had faith in our work, and our employees, both past and current, who had faith in our business model of servicing clients with respect and honesty. May this be the best year yet for all of us.

We were so busy taking care of our valued clients that we forgot to post on 3/01/2022 our 12th anniversary of Team Poteete Mechanical! So very typical of TPM says Kelley Poteete

With Kelley Poteete

For the last two years, we have been and will continue to advise our clients to increase their HVAC budgets almost quarterly! Several factors have caused or will cause price increases in HVAC equipment: 2020 COVID plant shut downs which caused unprecedented production delays since they had to rearrange fabrication stations and equipment locations to keep mandated 6-feet social distances; massive employee labor shortages in manufacturing plants, transportation and distribution centers since most were paid better to stay home; increased cost of metal (we received 32% cost increase on HVAC equipment in 1 year!), refrigerant (700% price increase on R-410a refrigerant in 2 years due to upcoming 2024 and 2029 production bans; see http://www.shingchem.com/2021/10/20/us-epa-considers-r410a-ban-from-2025/); the 2023 EPA mandate for manufacturers to fabricate new HVAC equipment in R-32 refrigerant and R-454B refrigerant to meet the UN Montreal Protocol Kigali Amendment regulations in lieu of the current use of R-410a refrigerant; and the 2023 EPA change for the US Southeast region (see attached chart) to increase the minimum SEER allowance for our HVAC equipment from 14-SEER to 15-SEER. In addition to the material price increases, our overhead prices have continued to rise due to installation and repair supplies (PVC condensation pipe now cost double from 2020), fuel charges (LGB) for both our auto gas and brazing gasses, insurance rates increases even without having any claims, and our labor rates to reflect the additional training required for our crew for the new slightly flammable refrigerants on the market and the highly energy efficient ducted and ductless Daikin VRV inverter systems we install.

As wisely stated by Shawn Patton on a Facebook HVAC Owner's Page:

SEER vs. SEER2: What’s the Difference?
If you work in the HVAC industry, you already know that new SEER2 regulations will be going into effect beginning in 2023. However, what you might not understand is what these new regulations entail. Specifically, what makes SEER2 different from the current SEER rating requirements?
With a better understanding of the differences between SEER and SEER2, you can confidently prepare for these changes and ensure your HVAC business operates within regulation standards.

Understanding SEER
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It refers to a measurement of efficiency given to HVAC equipment, such as central air conditioning systems. The higher the SEER, the more electricity the unit draws to perform, making it more efficient overall. This can save clients on their electric bills while also reducing unnecessary wear and tear on the unit itself.
Specifically, SEER ratings are calculated by dividing a unit’s BTUs by watt-hours.

What Makes SEER2 Different?
The industry has been using SEER ratings since 1992. Why, all of a sudden, are regulations changing?
SEER isn’t going anywhere. In fact, SEER ratings will continue to be used to measure efficiency. The rating will even be calculated in the same manner after the new SEER2 regulations go into place. So, what is changing? The conditions under which SEER testing will take place.
Beginning in 2023, units will be tested with a higher total external static pressure than before. The specific changes in pressure will vary based on the region where the testing is taking place. The purpose of changing static pressure conditions is to more accurately reflect the type of static pressure encountered inside a client’s home or place of business. Specifically, existing SEER testing conditions do not seem to account for the effects ductwork can have on a unit’s external static pressure, resulting in ratings that are not as accurate as they could be.
Because of the new rating system, many units being tested will likely see lower (but more accurate) SEER ratings. For example, in the North region, new SEER2 requirements will include a SEER2 rating of at least 13.4 for all residential air systems and a SEER2 rating of at least 14.3 for heat pumps. In the Southwest region, requirements include a SEER2 rating of at least 14.3 for all residential central air systems below 450,000 BTU, a rating of at least 13.8 for all residential central air systems 45,000 BTU and above and a SEER2 rating of at least 14.3 for all heat pumps. Lastly, in the Southeast region has the same requirements as the Southwest, except for the residential central air systems which will have a SEER2 rating of at least 14.3 for anything below 45,000 BTU.

In addition to our company's unofficial maxim of "don't just do it, do it right", one of our field sayings is "work smarter, not harder". As Don and I were loading our van last night with some Home Depot purchases, Mr. "Dislikes FB unless it is Marketplace" told me our full shopping cart really should be a FB post about the hidden cost of running a business, and how some clients can't really know how much we owners spend for tools, equipment and supplies that aid our technicians to work faster and easier in order to decrease their labor time, which also decreases our clients' invoice amounts. It might only take a few minutes to change a commercial air handler's blower motor's belt, diagnose a bad capacitor or clear a clogged condensate drain, but it also took $300 for a telescoping ladder and a wrench/socket set (bought during Father's Day supersale; regularly $400) to reach and remove that belt; $200 for that extra large shop vac, hose extensions and pipe adapter; and $150 for an electric meter that reads microfareds. We also have a large warehouse full of specialized tools, such as Zoomlocks, allthread rod saws, infrared cameras, shears, brakes and notchers, whose total cost might make me cringe, that assist us for our clients benefit, using the catchphrase from the TV show "The Six Million Dollar Man", be "Better...stronger...faster."
